P2 Workflow with IBM-T40 Laptop, File Corrupt?

Hi Everybody,

I am a long time DVX100a user and have recently bought a HVX with 3x 8gig P2 Card.
Just finished an assignment covering a 3 day concert with my DVX100a (Wide Shot) and HVX200 (Insert, Close ups....). I am having a work flow issue and a couple of conclusions.

Since I did not purchase a P2 Store yet, and my Macbook Laptop has no PCMCIA (for P2 insert), I opt to use my old IBM T40 (windows xp) laptop to offload the footage data so I can shoot again with the P2.

This is what happends, since I can NOT see the P2 footage on the Windows Xp (don't have dvrack), I just assume all the .mxf (Contents folder) file is fine, just sitting there. I plan to transfer it back to the P2 card one by one so I can import it into OSX's FCP5.
Guess what, after I transfer each Contents Folder back to the P2 card, I see NOTHING, just blue screen on the HVX LCD (MCR/VCR) mode. All those folder of Contents turn out to be empty (still see .mxf file in video) when view with HVX. Why is this happening?
Is it because when I transfer the P2 to the Windows XP (NTFS file system), it gets corrupted. Does anyone have any clue, thanks a bunch.

My conclusion on the assignment is that I must purchase a P2 Store, or buy a used Powerbook to import directly into FCP.

Thanks for everything,

-Marcus

I don't think the files are corrupt and the temporary storage on a NTFS file system didn't have anything to do with this.

More likely, you didn't do the transfer correctly. Did you copy the ENTIRE contents of the P2 cards including the LASTCLIP.TXT file, and not rename anything either while copying the files to the laptop or back to the P2 cards?

Also, you should install Panasonic's P2 Viewer application on the laptop. It will let you view the clips so you don't have to fly blind.

I use a T-41 with success so it must be something with the transfer. Like THoff says maybe you are not copying the Lastclip.txt file.

Also, P2 Viewer works for viewing the mxf files on windows

You can also use raylight's p2maker to drag and drop the whole folder. It will rebuild the p2 card from the data.

Yes Sir...
You are correct, I did NOT copy the LastClip.txt File over, now I learn the hardway; however, I did rename the "contents" folder. Good thing I did record to DV tape when P2 ran out of room.

Thanks again for the links to the P2 Viewer and other utilities.

You can recreate the lastclip.txt file, it's not hard. If that's all that's stopping you from importing your footage, just make a new lastclip.txt file.

Do you mean I can just make a file name "lastclip.txt" file and drop it along side of the "contents" folder and transfer back to the P2 card for HVX to read ?
Amazing.. life saver, let me try it.

Thanks !!

P2 & Recreating Lastclip.txt

P2 & Recreating Lastclip.txt

Hello everyone,

Thanks for the input on the earlier thread.
I proceeded to recreate and/or used a Lastclip.txt file from another P2 card and I am still having problem viewing the P2 Video in the Contents folder.

Please advice me on recreating the lastclip.txt file, what shold be in there? I checked the other P2 card's Lastclip file and it all looks different, such as:
0008KF1.09

What shold I put in the 1k lastclip.txt file that will help the P2/FCP/viewer to recognize my original video footage.

Thank you,

-Marcus

Please give more specific instructions on recreating the "lastclip.txt" what should be in it ? May I take the lastclip.txt from other p2 disk? I still can't get the .mxf from being recognized after copying the Contents folder back from my harddrive.

Thank you sir,

-Marcus
