XHA1 24f to DV 24p

Hey guys, I just shot a short film and I really want to edit it. The problem is it's in HD 24f and I can't really export anyting worthy in order to key out some green screen footage I have and it's just hard to work on in general. I want to downconvert to SD and work in good ol DV files until I can afford Aspect HD. What should I export my HD timeline as, in order to get good footage to work with in Premier Pro 2.0 for SD 24p footage, are there any pulldown's I want?

Thanks :)

There's a downconvert option in the A1 Signal menu. It adds a 2:3 pulldown. There seems to be a problem where NLE including Premiere and Vegas failed to recognize the pulldown flag and remove it automatically. It was a pain the last time I tried it since footage shows up interlaced in PP 2.0; couldn't get it to work but I didn't put that much time into it so there might be a way.

I haven't tried doing a downconvert yet but I've taken 24F HDV footage that was captured in DV Rack so that the pulldown was already removed. Imported that into a Canon 24F preset project and it worked nicely. With PP2.0 you can simply right-click on the clip in the project window and select the interpret option. From there you can select whether or not you want a pulldown applied. Can't recall if you can specify interlaced or not.

24F itself doesn't have any pulldown applied and you can capture from the camera as true 24fps video. The problem comes when you try to downconvert. Then the camera applies a 3:2 pulldown that for whatever reason Premiere doesn't recognized. And to my knowledge Premiere can't be told what type of pulldown to remove.

I saw Elton mention on another thread that its best to capture as an m2t and then outputting in an uncompressed format before keying.

If you can spare the disk space, it's always better to pull keys in an uncompressed format. There are a number of codecs such as QT 4:2:2 uncompressed, uncompressed AVI, CineForm, Sheer that work extremely well when the goal is maintaing quality through multiple renders, etc.

I'm actually not surprised by that, Marlon. There's a lot of luma info in the green channel and clean edges for a computer to work with. I'm just picky about recompression and prefer to finish projects in formats other than HDV...but I still back up to HDV tape as well.
