Hey, I was rooting around on the Panasonic site and found that there's now a description of what the HVX firmware update (2.0.3, released last October) actually does.
https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/support/cs/csregistp2m/ep2main/soft/hvx200/hvx200.htm

Looks like three main things are addressed:
(1) Dubbing function does not work when 1394 CTRL is set toEXT.It is solved. (NTSC only)
(2) When the time code is preset via 1394 in FREE RUN mode of P2,the time code value is not kept after tuning the power OFF.It is solved.(NTSC only)
(3) Notch filter function has been changed so that it does not work when LINE is selected.(PAL/NTSC)

Here's their pictorial description of how to check the version # of your firmware:

And, it looks like another firmware update will be coming in May. The HVX200/202 needs a firmware update to work with 16GB cards.

hey, what do the firmware updates for the P2 cards do? Ive never updated any cards ive used since they have been working fine.

There's only been one update that I know of, and that was to the 4GB cards. I believe the update was to handle situations where people were ejecting cards while they were still being written to, or turning the power off while recording; somehow the update was supposed to make that whole process better. But I could be talking out of my hat; that's just what I remember being told...

Barry, the release notes were always there, I remember reading the description on the website and wondering what else might be hidden in the update.

There was a firmware update at the very beginning for 8Gig cards, I had to find a PC to update all of mine when I first got them.

There will be another firmware upgrade when the 16gb cards are released. Panasonic has already noted this in the pre-release material.

Barry,

What does that actually mean for us HVX200 owners? Do we need to send the camera in for update?

No, the HVX's firmware is upgraded via an SD card. You do it yourself. It's easy-- takes about ten minutes.
