Thinking of buying an HVX, finally! Questions.

Thinking of buying an HVX, but won't be able to shoot in HD for a bit as I can't afford a Firestore or 2x8GB P2 for the time being.

This means I'll be using it as a DVX for a while in SD mode, unless I rent the FS or P2. Just curious how it fairs when being used as a DVX. I hear in SD mode it is slower (ISO/ASA) than the DVX and is noisier, especially in the Reds? Is this true?

Thanks.

Why not just buy a new or used 4gb P2 card? Offload it frequently. I do it all the time.

true, but how does the hvx's minidv compare to the dvx image?

DVX is 1 to 2 stops faster.

In 16:9 HVX is much sharper, in 4:3 they're about the same.

In 24P/30P HVX is better, in 60i DVX is better.

Also, keep in mind that 16 gig cards are just around the corner. Depending on what price point they come in at, you can expect to see some second hand 8 gig cards becoming available at an attractive price point. 8 gig card prices just went down to 700, too. One authorized dealer had them for like 653. Out of stock right now, of course, but... just keep it in mind. If new cards are being sold for 650-700 'ish, expect used 8 gig cards to come in at 600 or less, possibly. I *might* be selling four of them sometime in the future.

Later,
Jason

I'm guessing it utilizes the native 16x9 chips in 16x9 SD mode, so there is a gain in resolution, whereas in the DVX there is not?

What is 'better' about it. Short or long answer is fine. Less noise than the 100B?

Also, thanks Jason.

Much sharper in 16x9 than the DVX is. Lens is sharper, angle of view is wider, longer telephoto, just overall better. Comparable level of noise.

MAAAN. P2 is the rox.

I shot for 7 hourstoday, rolled on a lot of shots because I was dealing with chidlren and still had 1 minute of 2 8gb cards left after 7 hours.

The other 2 8gigs didn't even leave the box.

p2 f0r life.

Janusz, as long as you can afford the modest difference, go for the HVX.
For one, it will hold it's value far longer then the DVX in the next few years.
As mentioned, the P2 cards are coming down and that means you'll be able to afford a couple in no time.
Also, you will be able to use this camera long after the DVX has little job potential.
Also you'll be learning the camera for when you go HD.
The job potential for this camera is still much larger then any camera on the market.
Enjoy!

Thanks TedRR. One of my biggest factors. I used the cam once, on a rental w/ the PS adapter and loved it. Except the FS spanned clips on me and then corrupted the spanned clip (making me reshoot a whole scene, because the entirety of it was spanned). So the FS isn't where it want it to be yet, not stable/secure enough for me. P2's at 8GBs aren't too bad, but I do a lot of takes. So even a 16GB card won't do it for me, unless I get two, but then I may as well go for a FS. I will want one P2 card for VFR stuff though.

Can you record HD to P2 or FS and MiniDV to tape simultaneously? Is ANY simultaneous recording possible on the HVX? I know it is on the Sony V1U with a DR60 HDD and tape.

You can record to P2 and also out the firewire port to the FS-100 (or computer or DVCPRO-HD tape or P2 Mobile or whatever you have connected to the Firewire port).

When in DV mode you can record to the tape and also to a FireStore (or other device up above).

No simultanous tape & P2 in-camera though.

Although it would be very annoying, could you record to another suitable camera via firewire, having a downres/downconvert happening on the fly?

Not really.

The other camera has to understand DVCProHD because that's all the camera sends out in any of the HD modes, so that leaves you with the HVX and its higher-end brethren. The HVX can't dub DVCProHD to a MiniDV tape, and the other cameras don't have MiniDV tape mechanisms.

I know that the HVX cant encode DVCPROHD to MiniDV, I'm wondering if the HVX can record a MiniDV signal to MiniDV tape while it shoots DVCPROHD to P2/FS, mainly for archive purposes?

No. In P2 mode the tape drive is disabled.

You can shoot to P2 and FireStore at the same time. But if you want to use the tape drive, that means miniDV -- and yes you could record miniDV to the FireStore and the tape drive simultaneously. But that's about it; you cannot use the tape drive while the camera's in any other mode.

Thanks Barry. I posted this question as well in the DVX Techs section: I am curious as to what intensity of Magenta CC filter should be used to compensate for the camera's green bias. Any thoughts?

Thanks.
