hmm, the A1 1440x1080 resolution???

There isn't a camera on the market that records 1920x1080 for less than six figures. Even the $100,000 F900 is 1440x1080.

hmm, pardon my ignorance, I'm reading the published info at Canon...

it advertises to HV20 at 1920x1080... the A1 at 1440x1080... I know a $1k camera isn't going to do better than their $3k camera and also recognize the cmos vs ccd difference too, and admittedly, I'm trying to understand the tradeoffs between the two models/technoligies..

I'm deciding on a new camera for our Disney Vacation this summer..

thanks in advance for your help.

Basically the A1 records at 1440 x 1080 and then uses a process called pixel shift to uprez to 1920 x 1080. The HV20 doesn't record native 1920 x 1080 either, it uses a Bayer pattern to give it that resolution.

Again, *nobody* (in common use, under $100k) records 1920x1080. Canon advertises 1920x1080, yes -- they even stuck a sticker right on top of the HV20 to say "1920 x 1080". But the recorded video is 1440x1080. All HDV, HDCAM, XDCAM-HD, and 50Hz DVCPRO-HD is 1440x1080. Nobody anywhere records 1920x1080 yet, that I can think of in common use.

Don't get hung up over the # of pixels recorded, it's a nearly irrelevant statistic. What matters is how detailed the images are, not the # of pixels you record. You could record a VHS signal onto HDCAM SR tape (at 1920x1080) but it's still going to be a smeary mushy VHS-caliber image...

You noticed that 1920 x 1080 sticker too huh? Oh well... hey am i the only one that thinks that the HV20 resembles a 1995 Honda Civic hatchback body style? No? Ok well then it must be the shrooms...

...

There is a brand namend PANASONIC that is going to bring the world true 1920x1080 resolution with there new cam the HPX3000. By using the AVC-Intra codec, and a 10-bit image at full 1920x1080 resolution, not 1440x1080.

So "common use" is closing in. Oh.. the price target is $50.000 not 6 numbers.

I am afraid that is the case... hey, it's almost for free! I'm sure the number in Euro's is higher.

I thought that the HV20 had a true 1920x1080 chip, but down-rezed to 1440 to record to tape?

HV20's chip is 3 million pixels almost, but it's a bayer-pattern so only half of those pixels are green, 1/4 are red, and 1/4 are blue. They get read in a de-mosaic'ing pattern to produce the final image, which is probably around 1920x1080. Whether the lens can resolve that much detail is as yet untested. Then all internal processing gets done at 1920x1080, and subsampled/prefiltered to 1440x1080 for recording.
