Ikan V-8000HD monitor: 800x480 component

how does the V-8000HD compare to the V-8000W? I can get a VGA to component cable and hook it up that way.. Plus I can hook it up to my macbook pro as a second screen to edit with on the road.. It seems to me that the resolution is the same, just no component inputs.. Same monitor, cheaper.. Comments?

there must be something more in the guts than just resolution. as i have never seen an lcd monitor for under a grand that was good enough for critical focus. and the 8000HD is very much so.

There are multiple parts that make up field LCDs like we use.. I'm no expert, so my information my not be complete or accurate, but I know more than the average joe.. There's the LCD itslf, there's a power supply and then there's a scaler board.. I know the components in a Marshall are high end and they are mostly Digital signals, with some analog bythroughs here and there.. The key specs in a monitor are resolution, brightness (nits or cd/m2) and contrast ratio.. different boards control different specs.. but the resolution, i believe, lies within the LCD.. Both the 8000w and 8000HD are 8" and have the same resolution.. My logic tells me that the LCD component is the same.. I prefer the 8000w model with VGA, because I can use it as a high res field monitor.. BUT, I can also hook it up to my MacBook Pro and use it as a fullscreen HD preview while editing on the road.. Plus it's cheaper..

Once again goes to show that price is directly related to quantity produced.
For sure this is a great monitor, and COMPARED to other offerings, a bargain.

Still amazing though, that the same amount of money can buy a 1080P in a 16:10 / 1920 x 1200 resolution monitor, with component, DVI, composite, s-video, and HDMI input.

Yet, at 24" and 22lbs hardly very "portable"! :)

Isn't there some blue filter you can get that does the same as the blue gun on pro monitors?

Also, maybe this is really stupid, but if you are hooking in via component analog HD, can you just leave some connectors off to get blue-only? Or would that not help in callibration?

Can you attach the monitor upside down? Does that solve the flip problem for 35mm adaptor users?

I remember back in the 80's shooting 1" tape and using tough blue 50 gell over the monitor to do set up.

sadly the ikan HD monitor does NOT have an image flip feature. at least thats what the tech guy in their office told me

So just mount the monitor upside down... It's what I'm going to do... : P

If it doesn't have blue gun capability its not good for much other than focus and framing... The Marshall has blue gun.

yea the marshall is expensive because its a Full on Color accurate monitor.

i had a realy real bad eperience with ikan 2 months ago.i was sent a used defective monitor.although they were realy good about takin it back.i still believe they are ponding off their defective returns on the public hoping we're dum enough to overlook it.

How are people going to mount it upside down? Does it have a top screw like the Marshall...

If it looks good and delivers what it says.. it's a no brainer. Could get two for the price of a marshall. The sony batteries are also cheap.. and cheap charger.. Probably another 200 bucks and you[]'d be able to get 4 batteries and 2 chargers.

Anyone know when It will be shipping? I have a gig May 15th that I'd be renting a Marshall... but shoot for this price I could own one instead....

Kick the tires at NAB ya'll... report back and hopefully this will be a good inexpensive monitor option for all of us still without one. I have a full sized HD that I bring out... but need something portable for field stuff...

would be nice to pick up a sunshade for it... and I'll make a little hoodie drap/ redneck covering thing for looking at in the bright sun.... Happy DIY days.

indeed. I'm in need to purchase one and at half the price of the Marshall... would be a nice purchase... and I could even afford a 35mm adapter with the savings alone....

What ever happened to the Sanyo-Epson 7" 1080p HD portable LCD monitor that was supposed to be hitting the market this spring? It has 1080 pixels instead of 480 would be fantastic for critical focus, and decent for reference.

Same here... NO response from the company... What terrible CS.. Do they make decent products atleast? I've tried reaching them several times with NO response back.. I need to see if the monitor will be available for a shoot that starts on the 12th of May.... Now is that so difficult? lol

I saw the the V-8000H last Monday at NAB, and I talked to the sales rep there. He said it was just released that day. From what I saw, it was very sharp compared to their other models they had, but unless it was next to the Marshall, it's hard to say which one was better. I don't recall seeing a mount on the top, and I'm pretty sure it only had one on the bottom. However, I wasn't really checking for that. I complained about the Sony batteries too, but the Ikan sales rep explained the reason they put them on there was because Sony's batteries are the cheapest.

Just got off the phone with Ross at Ikan, got through immediately, super nice guy, answered all of my questions.

Does not have flip function, but can mount it upside down like the Marshall. Lighter than the marshall. Same resolution for HD focusing.

A higher end model with flip functionality will be coming out - but not for 6-12 months.

oh, and $500 bucks cheaper too. Sounds like a no brainer to me!

cheers,

JP
