Transferring Firestore V2 Files into V3 problem

So I accidentally recorded from HVX to Firestore in the "RAW DV" format a while ago, we could never get a livecapture to work properly or get FCP or Avid to notice the files. So I backed it up on my hardrive so that I could use the FS for other shoots. In the mean time I upgraded to new V3 software.

I copied the files back into the firestore just the way they were before and when I go to play them I get a 1394 error that it cant recognize the format. So I figure Ill downgrade to V2 and try again, only the firestore wont upgrade using the new fs100 bin file i drag in, maybee it knows its a downgrade?

Anyhow I would like to figure out how to bypass this, so I can give this footage another try. Any suggestions? If theres one thing ive learned about RAW DV its that I hate it with a passion and dont understand why it is even a recording option in the first place, although its still my fault for recording in that format =(

Once you record with the RAW DV format, it's in the RAW DV format, and that's that.

You'd have to find software that will translate that format into whatever your NLE supports. There are a few uses for it, so it's kept around, but most of the popular NLEs today don't support it.

Capturing live from the FS is pretty straight forward and easy. My FS-100 video guide shipping in a day or two covers the whole thing.

well i have a P2 card now, last night i was able to record from the FS into a card, then back into the FS and organize P2, i was able to change Quicktime PN which avid doesent like aparently, into proper P2 format.

So I'm guessing if I could play back these RAW DV files into the camcorder like I used to be able to before the V3 upgrade then I can do the same in transferring the RAW DV into P2 format.

I've not done RAW DV, but I record live from a 3.0 FS-100 into FCP 5.1.4 all the time with no problem. You'd have to set FCP's capture settings to RAW DV, which I don't think it supports. So, that may be the problem. I know for a fact 3.0 doesn't diable any live playback function. But you do have to set your HVX or FCP to the same format you recorded in for live capture.

ya im just wondering why I dont have in camera playback since upgrading to V3 and why it wont let me downgrade so I am testing with the EXACT same setup that worked before.

You do know that you have to set the HVX to the same format you recorded to on the FS, just like you have to do with P2 cards. Since the HVX does not support RAW DV format, it may not be possible. I'll have to test that one day.

But I am getting playback just fine with FS-100 3.0 in both FCP and in the HVX. I think it's that neither supports RAW DV. I haven't tried it, I'm just guessing.

Contact Focus Tech Support, they may have a solution.

I know the HVX must support raw DV because we were able to record from HVX to FS in RAW DV mode, we were then able to play back to the HVX and have video and audio work perfectly.

Avid seems to be working better with Ver 3 than it did before with version 2, I get device control and working capture with the restored RAW DV footage now, only no audio comes through at all. I'm going to tamper with settings and see if i can make it work in Avid, if not we will try the editors FCP on friday.

Yeah, I always tell folks to just stay as far away from that RAW DV setting as possible. Most users don't know it's an actual format and think is going to give them better quality, which it won't. I know that Focus kept it there on the FS-100 for a very small, tiny, little contingency that needs it. Wish it were possible for them to just drop the format all together.

I never touch it, so I'm not sure what it outputs to. I do know other users have mistakenly used it and done live captures back to FCP to get the foorage.

Good luck!

FS-100 is not playing nicely with Avid when recording in FS's PN mode. Here is the email I got today from Focus:

Engineering is looking into the issue. A fix will be in the next version update 3.1. This version will be posted on our web page www.focusinfo.com <http://www.focusinfo.com> .

Thanks,
Joe

So...

Its not Avid who has the problem... its Firestore (Focus).

Yeah, that's been a know problem for awhile. FS-100 and Avid, it's an audio thing. Something about Avid's proprietary... well... anyway... it's a know problem and Focus has been working very closely and intensely with Avid to fix it. Call both on conference call about it, that's your best bet for a real answer.

Stay tuned...

Next update will KILL, trust...

It is though a problem with Firestore's PN mode, as the PN modes recorded to the P2 cards work just fine in Avid.

The workaround is to cut a couple frames from the heads and tails of these clips, or just mark in/out on what you need and they should import and play fine.

With the ver3 software and my ver2 RAW DV's lol, i was able to get device control and picture into avid for capture which goes off without a hitch, exept for one small detail....no audio...

I think I have tampered with the settings to no avail but maybee there is something I havent tried yet, its 1080i/59.94 project with footage that I though was 1080i/24p but apparently only works in 59.94 project. We used on camera sound and a boom mic without mixer right into the HVX. I got nothing with tracks A1-4 but when i selected A5 or A6 i get some wacky noises
