720/25pN and 720/50p into Avid

So Avid Xpress Pro HD doesn't support the 720 modes of the European HVX, only 1080.

I've previously managed to get 720/50p into a 1080p project by using Cineform, into Vegas, export as uncompressed AVI, and import into Avid. It worked, but it took a long time, and an insane amount of disk space. I also don't know if this workflow would work with 720/25pN footage?

What about the Serious Magic DVCProHD Decoder, could this be a more elegant solution to get the 720/25pN and 720/50p into Avid?

- Does DVCPro HD Decoder support the European frame rates?
- Can the DVCPro HD Decoder upres from 720 to 1080?
- Can Avid Xpress Pro HD directly import the avi or quicktime files from DVCPro HD Decoder?

What's the best and/or quickest way to convert the files to something Avid compatible?

Replying to my own question,

I'm now using DVFilm Maker for this purpose, and so far it seems to work great for the 25pN material. Outputting quicktime, resized to 1920x1080, importing into a 1080 25p project.

From the Avid user forum today:

"Hi all,
I know this has been a hot topic for many months and that you are all very much aware that native support of the 720p25p format in a 720p/25 project type is not currently available on Avid editing systems. The good news is that Avid will shortly announce support for the 720p50p format for DVCPRO and DNxHD for all Avid editors. Panasonic HVX200 customers can preserve the look of 720p25p in a broadcast ready format by selecting the 720p25p (not to be confused with 720p25pN) camera setting. Using this setting, users can ingest 720p25p content for output as 720p50p."

Paul, do you think they will implement 720p, but not 720 pn?

I think this is really weak, as the Aid users are waiting quite long for this solution..Edius had it from beginning and FCP updated this, Avid users are waitning since about 1 year..!

I dont care so much, as i am an Edius user, but on the other hand i wirked for a documentary-project, with 50 hours of 720pn, adding timecode-sync via clockit (which works in Avid only..or throught some work aroound in FCP) and they have serious problems to edit it, without having big workarounds..!

So an update on this in AVID would have solved it...so..is it 720pn inclusive or is Avid slow again?

All I know is from this short statement on the forum.

It looks as if no pn. I wonder if a there would be a work around of some kind.

I'm also not sure how good it'll be to edit 720/25p when we'd only be able to out at 50p.

Well, it could be everything and honestly i would find it very disappointing when its no pn support.....i guess the 50 is rather a point of view, probably it stands for 50i which is actually the same in most of the settings in edius....so we will have to wait what comes...!

From an engineering standpoint, PN is easier to implement than P because you no longer worry about which frames to eliminate / duplicate and which not to. I cannot imagine that Avid will not implement PN mode, even if they don't specifically mention it.
