My thoughts on the XHA1

By the way, one of the other things I've heard from people who are on the fence about getting an XHA1, especially those coming from the DVX world, is that Canon's colors are flat. While this is true out of the box, the possibility is there to tweak the settings to the point that they come close to the intensity of the DVX and/or HVX. I think some people may have been misled by the pictures in Barry Green's article. Clearly, the HVX looks like it has superior color.

As I've mentioned in the PRESETS thread, I am currently working on a preset that will give users the choice to shoot with colors that approach that of the Panny cameras.

Here are two stills from a test I did yesterday using this "work in progress" preset called VIVIDRGB:

Nice, is this the tweaked version of the "PANALOOK" ?

Not really, I basically started from scratch with this one. When I compare stuff shot with the Panalook and VividRGB, the former looks really flat so this is much more intense.

This new one is still a work in progress so it's going to take a few days for me to finish it up. I need to do some more testing first but I am very pleased with it so far. Keep an eye on the preset thread

Hey Disjecta and other A1 users you mind sharing what kind of computer power you guys are using to edit A1 footage? With the Aspect HD plugin. Thanks in advance.

PC with a Core2 Du0 at 2.13ghiz, 2gig ram and 1TB of Sata Raided Storage. Also, my video card is a Nvidia 7900GS.

Using Aspect HD it is very responsive. Blows the doors off my 3ghz dual xeon workstation at the office.

I use Premiere Pro 1.5 and 2.0 as needed but I recently installed the trial of Edius 3 broadcast. Holy crap! It has got to be the most efficiently coded editor I have ever used. Using native .m2t files (edius doesn't recognize cineform avis) I can apply 2-3 filters on clips, transition and titles and it is all realtime. I have only found 2-3 spots in this project where the number of effects bog down during a transition and need to be rendered. This sofware has serious horsepower.

Having said that I do not care much for the interface and the workflow could be better....I am used to Premiere after all. I just wish Adobe could have an engine under the hood like Edius. Then we'd really be smoking!

Sweet thanks for the response. Does your premiere preview in realtime when editing with aspect HD avis? Or do you have to render the timeline. I'm talking about without any effects applied to it.

I have this poor setup:

Athlon xp 3200+
1gb ddr400
Radeon x800xl
Premiere Pro 2.0 + Aspect HD

Amazingly it works quite well! I don't have to render the clips on the timeline to play them realtime. When I add effects such as CC I have to render to get it realtime.

Sweet, that makes me feel a lot better. I'm supposed to get the A1 today and I have a laptop AMD Dual core 64x 1.8ghz and 2gb of ram, so it should work fine then on Premier Pro 2.0 with Aspect HD. :P Thanks. Can't wait to shoot my next movie, Wait for it, it'll be ready in a month or so. I'll have some screens in a couple of weeks up :P So anxious I could kill :)

1.8 ghz single-core
2.0 RAM
Video card does nothing in Vegas.

Realtime with Cineform codec used, sowehow.

When I prerender in Vegas, it plays nicely once, but then it is back to normal.

You're a credit to the dv cummunity D. Considered, unbiased, groundbreaking info and your clips are always close by if I'm needing a little inspiration.

I've been using panalook almost exclusively since getting the A1, really looking forward to giving the new one a try out. Thanks very much for posting.
