P2 cards and Powerbooks that can't run FCP 5.0.4

I have a Powerbook G4 867, with 1GB ram. I can't run FCP 5.0.4 (using HD footage), but I was wondering, If I install the P2 driver, will I at least be able to use this laptop to take files off of a P2 card?

I do not own a HVX200 or P2 card, so I can't experiment. Has anyone out there tried this?

Thanks.

Why can't you run FCP 5.0.4?

The P2 driver just allows you to mount the card. To view the footage you need to either import it with FCP 5.0.4 (it doesn't have a viewer...that is PC only), or you need to upgrade to FCP 5.1.4 (That importer has a viewer), or you need to buy P2 Log by www.imagineproducts.com.

Again...why can't up run FCP 5.0.4?

I just assumed I can't run FCP 5.0.4 on the Powerbook because Apple's system requirements for this version is a processor speed of 1.25 or greater (for HD formats).

I have 5.0.4 installed on the Powerbook and have worked on DV projects without any problems. I have a desktop G5 that I use for DVCPro HD projects.

What I hope I can do is use the Powerbook in the field, instead of a P2 Store, to mount P2 cards and remove data from them to an external hard drive connected to the Powerbook. I will be shooting in DVCPro HD format.

I will then import those files stored on the external hard drive into a FCP project on my
G5.

Do you see any problem with this workflow? Again, I have no way of testing it yet, because I don't own a HVX200 or P2.

Thanks for responding to my thread.

Thanks, Doc.

Just one more question: Are there ever problems with the file transfers? Is there anyway to verify they have transferred without any corruption? Obviously, I won't be able to view them without FCP or other software. Do you see this as a problem?

I haven't had a problem with transferring the data from the P2 card to the hard drive. The only way to check without FCP is with P2 Log or HD Log....or if you had a PC Laptop with the P2 viewer sofware installed.

Yes there can be corruption problems, but it seems like the cure is to use the write-protect tab on the cards. If you make sure to diligently (always and without fail) write-protect your cards before EVER putting them in a Mac, that may (emphasize MAY) solve the "glitch" issue.

For verification, P2 Genie doesn't yet do verification but is supposed to add that in the next revision or so I think I heard.
