Yes it is true, starting in a few days there will be a $250 rebate on the a1, and a $500 rebate on the g1.

If you bought yours within the last few weeks, like me, perhaps we can all grieve together!

Otherwise Canon is really playing for keeps, they are now the cheapest by by more than $2000, compared to the comepetition!

In case you do not believe me, i have attached the rebate pdf.

I wonder if they are going to release something new at the upcoming NAB show in April.

I feel it a little ... but I'd pay $250 for the amount of use I've gotten out of the camera in the last months.

Buyers remorse?? More happy faces you mean!!
Its an aggressive priced article, and it is remaining that this way.

Two questions.

Where did you get that PDF, could you please link to that, thanks.

What would people guess as to the odds of Canon releasing something new at NAB, or anyone else for that matter.

That price with the rebate is smashing, but I wouldn't mind getting a better camera if it was juuust around the corner..any guesses (and yes, i realize if i am really that curious i should just wait ;) )

Grieve? I'm trying to feel sorry for you, but still can't get over the fact that I can't get the rebate myself since I don't live in the US of A.

Zero. Canon has never introduced a camera at NAB, IIRC.

The presence of a rebate is startling, I must admit. Is it interest in the HV20 that's pushed them to want to offer a rebate? I just don't get it. But it makes the lowest-cost HD camcorder even lower, so it's a good thing for buyers, but it's puzzling; they're already kicking the snot out of Sony's V1 in price and, by the traffic on this site at least, in the hearts of buyers. Why rebate? I don't know, but don't look a gift horse in the mouth either.

Even in the unlikely event that something new was announced by Canon at NAB, it wouldnt be available for months, correct? Same thing for Panasonic, if they had something to announce?

Canon releases product relatively quickly, usually within 6 to 10 weeks of the announcement. Panasonic, JVC and Sony usually pre-announce months and months before release.

It is rather puzzling and startling, to say the least. The camera is now attainable at $3,250 which is astounding.

I think it could be as simple as Canon wanting to keep the momentum going. I can't help but wonder if there are truly competitive AVCHD cameras around the corner, but they will certainly face some stiff competition at that pricepoint.

I simply love this camera and I cherish each and every day I spent with it. Even if it had dropped 500$ I wouldn't feel any remorse. Besides I already covered this amount of money with paid work I've done with it....The only remorse I have is not to have used as much as I would have liked professionally...YET!

Yeah, the avc-hd thing could be the reason for the rebate, maybe the buyers remorse has not even really begun... the AVC-A1 could be just around the corner, with solid state recording and high bitrate compression...LOL

Either way, i think i am going to try and get the company that sold me my A1 to post date an invoice!

Remorse The remorse is that we in the UK always have to pay a bigger price for our gear than you guys in the Good old US of A and there is no chance of us getting even a sniff of a rebate so why not go and drown your sorrows and think well I might not be entitled to a rebate but at least Idid not pay as much as they did across the pond. think yourselves lucky.

Regards Alan feeling sorry and full of remorse every time we pay more than every bodyelse and I am not saying it is your fault I am just sAYING THINK YOURSELVES LUCKY YOU DO NOT PAY WHAT WE HAVE TO PAY TO START WITH

AGAIN MY VERY BEST REGARDS ALAN ACROSS THE POND

Good point, but its all fairly relative after all. Simply to be on this forum 'greiving' about buying $xxxx cameras means you're probably living better than %90 of the worlds population anyways.

Sometimes marketing people just get bored or proactive and do things like this from time to time. It could be some tricky manuver based on insider info, upcoming product...i'd think just as likely something to people on the edge to buy one. If they were really wanting to push it they would probably just drop the price of the camera.

I just received my A1 last Friday so, yes, I'm disappointed but I definitely don't have buyer's remorse. For the reasons that Barry gave, I was a bit surprised to hear of the rebate but in this market, price drops, rebates, and newer better cameras are coming out all the time. If you want to swim, you have to jump in the pool sometime.
