HVX-Brevis35 @ Battery Park

SWEET. I like the footage from this and the SGpro a lot more than some of the M2 clips... and have heard of the tweeking and all that is needed. How's this adapter to use?

Looks really nice... did you have your OIS on?

Aram, I beg of you to stop down the lens, even only a few stops, maybe to f4. The bokeh would become much more pleasant and the image sharper, and outside you have plenty of light to work with anyway.

Depending on the lens, stopping down can sometimes cause vignette/fall off issues with adapters, thanks to the aperture blades.

I agree with you funkbomb, these adapters often need to be used in a more subtle manner, especially when you have lots of available light, such as outdoors during the day. That said, in this instance, I think Aram has done a good job of achieving a deeper DOF for a lot of shots and has also done a great job of controlling the highlights in the clip, often difficult to do when shooting outdoor scenes, with sky.

I never did mind the little things. :D

I think I used both the lens iris and the camera iris but nto at the same time. It was either the lens was wide open or the camera depending on where my hand went first. I don't know much about where the sweet spots are on lenses yet but going to get some knowledge soon. This Lens I was using just vignettes when you close it down though and its a 4.0. The next time I shoot I will try remembering to keep the lens aperature around the F4 you recommend.
I am all for learning as much as I can to improve on the images from the adapter because I don't see myself not using it any time soon. Yeah its a pain sometimes but I think the result is worth it. Plus it gives me an excuse to go shoot stuff thats not a narrative.

No OIS on. I made sure I turned it off as soon as I put the Brevis on the camera. I read somewhere that you are supposed to shut if off when you use an adapter.

cool.. I know on most of my lens the sweet spot is at 5.6/8 range. Looking forward to seeing more good work from ya...

Aram, it all looks very cool! The old man's shot is probably my favorite. The ending is perfect. Did you do any CC or is it all on camera?

That's a common misconception. People think the stabilization will see the edges or grain of the moving screen and try to compensate for it's vibrating movement; on the contrary, it's moving much too fast for that. I have it on all the time and it simply moves with the action in the frame. Perhaps at extremely high shutter speeds...I haven't tried that.

f4? Cheap sears zoom? I need to send you out a coke can with a wax paper diffuser to go with that. I have a sneaky suspicion you'd make that look good too :-)

We'll have to fix you up with one the new CF? imaging elements ... it'll give you a few extra stops without vignette on that zoom lens.

The only thing I did to the color was adjust curves slightly to bring the colors and contrast out. Everything else was in camera. I'll try the OIS on a little and see if it does anything.
How do you know where the sweet spot is, trial and error? Or do you sit there with a monitor and turn it slowly to find it and is it always the same weather its indoors or out?

Hi Aram,
very very nice footage.
I dont have a HVX but on your footage at 00:01:34 where the little girl with the red jacket jumps the red colors are extremely pixelated. Is this from the *.mov compression or is it a HVX error.

I mentioned this because my 1CCD Sony consumer camcorder has exactly the same problems with the red colors. All reds are pixelated and I dont know how to eliminate this.

best regards
Daniel

Funkbomb you won't see anything on a small screen if you have the OIS turned on, but if you do a film transfer (ouch), you will drive the transfer house engineers to bottoms up a big bottle of Jack Daniels. Then again those guys are always drinking; especially colorist.

Thanks! Will be shooting some more this weekend, I wanted to try to get to some actual locations where I plan to shoot at but it looks like its going to be cold this weekend and I bet the place is closed. Its out in Newpaltz, lake Miniwaska. It's a nice mineral lake along a cliff side. The water is always ice blue there since the mineral content is so high plants cant live in it.

I kind of don't see any banding but it might be from setting the curves in post along with compression. I do see that the reds are really bright in that shot but they don't bleed or anything on a big screen. I will be putting up a full rez version either tonight or tomorrow and take a looksee and see if you see anything. The HVX handles reds with no problem, the DVX has a bit of a problem if you don't watch out.

I wanted to correct my previous statement about OIS. It is not done visually, rather there are multiaxis accelerometers mounted in the camera that detect acceleration and correct the image optically with servos. If the vibration from the adapter is strong enough, it can shake these accelerometers and cause the OIS to actually add to any movement caused by vibration, due to unavoidable lag time of the system. However, the vibration is so small I can't imagine any camcorder's OIS reacting to the small magnitude of it.
