Using Raylight's Red, Yellow Green with DV Rack recorded AVI's?

Does anyone know of a way to use Raylights red, yellow, green capabilities with DV Rack recorded AVI's? Raylight works great for me with the MXF files and Raylight AVI's, but the DV Rack avi's are just too slow on my system. The Raymaker converter will convert MXF's to Raylight AVIs, but not other AVI's...

Any suggestions?

It's not likely gonna work. Definitely won't work with red. You could maybe try editing the file's header so it uses RAYL as the codec, but I still think that's 99% not gonna work.

yeah, I actually tried changing the file header... it just rendered the file unuseable, though maybe I'll try again. It's too bad DV Rack can't record to mxf format.

Barry, do you know if PP2 has a function to render low res proxy files for use in the timeline?

if i remember correctly if you use dvrack to record as quicktime you can then convert those to raylight.....altought it will take time and disk space.

Raylight already has the capability to playback DV Rack Avi's, you just need to uninstall the DV Rack codec and install raylight. The timecode burn-in feature may not work, and Raylight Red will not work of course since there is no proxy.

If you need both systems installed at the same time, then using a FourCC code changer will work (get one at http://dvfilm.com/raylight/AviC.zip ),
change in both places from dvh1 to RAYL.

If you need to use Raylight Red then drag the changed AVI into P2 Maker, make an MXF file, then use RayMaker to make the proxy Avi's. The tiimecode will be restriped. Also at this point it will change to square pixel format if that's desired.

None of these operations will recompress the video so there's no loss in quality.

this is amazing... I don't need raylight red, as yellow works fine on my machine. How do I uninstall the the DV Rack codec... will uninstalling the DV Rack batch converter remove it? I'm a little gun shy about DV Rack installation after the activation issues. Once I do so, the avi's will be played using the raylight codec and thus allowing the use of Raylight yellow? Will I need to change the clip settings of the files to play on a PP2 timeline?

Thanks - I'm becoming more and more impressed with raylight!

I too am curious as to how to force the Raylight codec to be used. Am searching their site now, but if anyone knows...

If you don;t want to uninstall their decoder, or move the AVI's to another computer, then use the Fourcc Changer as I outlined above.

I believe with these native-size AVI's (raylight same as Dv rack) you have to manually set the pixel aspect ratio to 1.333, or edit in a squeezed, square pixel project. If that's a problem then convert the AVI's to MXF as I described above and use the Raylight plugin.

The only project setting you might want to change is the video compression used for previews, set it to Raylight and make sure the raylight output folder is configured.

Post #10 in this thread explains how to do it using a fourCC changer.

You are correct... the dv rack avi's use the hd anamorphic 1080 setting (1.333 as you stated).

I tried uninstalling the decoder (no need for it with Raylight), but it didn't default the dv rack avi's to the raylight codec with raylight yellow and green capabilities. It still seemed to play them with the dv rack codec. Do you mean remove the decoder on the laptop used to record, and the files will record as raylight avi's instead of dvrack? Is there a different way I need to remove that dv rack codec... or do I have to remove dv rack in it's entirety?

BTW, the fourCC changer works great - I just don't want to have to do that for every file recorded on dv rack.

wow! Don't tell me you just cooked that up...

I'll have the opportunity to try it later this week - THANK YOU!

funny thing... the first time I tried the fourcc changer, it was with a dvcpro50 file, and it didn't work... in fact, it threw my whole system for a big loop. Then after this thread started, I tried it with a dvcprohd file, and it worked well... so I thought I must have screwed something up the first time... but today we had a dvcpro50 shoot, and those files have the same issues as the first time I tried it - wreaks havoc with the system.

Is there a reason why changing those codes wouldn't work on dvcpro50 files? grrrr this is frustrating.

Thanks...
