im about to order a dvx100b from 42nd street photo

i called panasonic and the woman saidn teh only way to knwo if a camera is qualified for teh rebate is to read off the sereilnumber, (on the box)

she said that i need to purchase the cam from the store then before opening it read the seriel number to her and she will let me know if it is good for the rebate.

i called 42nc street photo and they said that the camera DOES qualify for teh rebate...

i dont really want to order the camera and then find out its no good for the rebate....

has anyone got a the rebate with a camera from 42nd street photo?

i know theyve been around for a while and do have a storefront on 5th avenue in nyc that i have seen....

heres the link to the cam on their site...

please help me decide

On the Pannasonic website there should be a list of authorized dealers. Check to see if 42nd photo is one of them. Although at the price they're offering the DVX I doubt if you qualified for the rebate. Anything that low is probably gray market. Do the math, $2600 minus the $500 rebate is $2100, way too low. Most authorized dealers have DVX around $3100 which will bring you to $2600 with the rebate.

By the way, after a quick check on 42nd Photo, it seems that they also do the bait and switch scam. I stay away if I were you.

well when i spoke to panasonic i asked hte same quesiton, i wanted to know if thye knew if 42nd street was a authorized seller, they said the only way to knwo if the camera is covered under the rebate is to see the seriel number....

42nd street may try and bait and switch me but they have been open for a number of years... i live 15 miles from their retail store, i doubt they could get away with much...

Hmmm, I wouldn't count on their retail store actually being a "retail store"

Is it really worth all the hassle? Just buy from a legit dealer like EVS or B&H.

ive been int eh store before, its legit. the reason why i dont want to order from somewhere else is becasue im on a budget.

what about the dvx100bs on ebay that are in teh buy it nows, those go for 2300 and the sellers have a million feedback...

how are those?

The only way to be sure is to take off and nuke the site from orbit.

Wait a minute... :D

Um, I mean, the only way to be sure is to buy from an authorized dealer. Whether or not this store is legit is a secondary question to whether or not they're an authorized Panasonic ProLine dealer; even a legit store that's not authorized could wind up with non-US product (unlikely, yes, but possible).

Even if you were to find a non-rebate camera for less than the cost from an authorized dealer minus the rebate, there's still the total lack of a warranty to consider...

i waas reading on that page that if the box doesnt include the dvx book and software then its not official us. it comes in the box?
i figued it would be mailed secondary with the rebate...?

I'm willing to bet that 42nd Photo doesn't qualified for any rebate. I guess it's up to you to decide to pro and cons of buying from an unauthorized dealer.

Pros
You get instant savings vs. having to wait for the rebate. Assuming you bought from a reputable store of course. The final price comes out to roughly the same assuming you're not suckered into buying "accessories."

Cons
No software or DVX book.
No warranty so if the camera arrives broken or something happened down the line you're screwed

what about getting it used,

how many hours is alot?
im coming off the vx2100 so i dont know abot hour counts in terms of wear and tear

like if i bought one with 150 hours, is that alot, a little? good/bad?

The DVX manual states that it is advised to change the camera's head at 2000 hour mark. So to maintain good quality recording. so i really have no idea what is too much and what is O.K for you.

I use to have a PDX10. by the time i sold it, the camera states 9x 10 head = 90 hours.

Some buyers said that is too much, but the person said that bought it from me like the hours he saw.

I work right on 42nd and 5th and I wouldnt buy a DVX from any of these stores around here. They are all shadey immigrants always trying to get you to buy more stuff. For the SLR cameras they change out the lenses for really cheap ones and try to get you to buy the one thats supposed to come with the camera.
