me converted to cartoon. shot with a1

thanks, i really do need to work on it. Perhaps rotoscope a bit more for a more crisp image. Theres tons of possibilitys to get artistic with it.

did you have to export to PS and edit each frame individually to get the look? what is the reason behind using illustrator?

Here is a copy of a video we did to make it look like the Charles Schwab commercials...

Done totally in Vegas... First real attempt at doing anything like that and done over a year and a half ago...

hrmmm interesting. It feels too much like a filter to me, however, i think your lines look slightly better than mine because the small objects (like that spray bottle) are highlighted too? How did you do that?

Oh and Jay, were you asking me how i did mine or dougster how he did his?

Yeah, I did it within FCP using a Line Art filter and Posterize. It didn't spend any time cleaning it up. Just popped them in, rendered and compressed.

It has been so long ago I don't really remember what I used to achieve it... I believe it was a combination of a couple different filters and using parent child relationships (add / subtract / multiply)... I think VASST has a plugin that is called edge detective that makes it a HECK of a lot easier than what I was doing back in the old days...

Marlon-

It makes me want to throw up it's so freakin good... I think that rox... If I had remembered half of what you have forgotten about vfx I would be in tip top shape...

Couple questions... What camera, What software (3d, video, & score), How long to edit, What kind of budget, and What was the project for?

Gracias!
Doug D.

Camera was an XL2, used 3d max and maya for 3d, edited in final cut pro, compositing in after effects and shake, and music composed in logic. Took me about 4 months to complete and its still not done. What you saw is about 75% done. No budget, its a student project... actually its my senior animation thesis project.

There is a lengthy tutorial put together by Aharon Rabinowitz at Creative Cow. The final render is not as simple as just loading a filter and pressing a button.

Impressive results you guys have posted. One observation I make, for an animated cartoon look, change the frame rate. Cartoons are often 12 or 15 fps, so if you shoot 30fps (29.97) video, slow down your sequence by 50%, thereafter, increase the sequence speed to 200%, with a setting that holds/duplicates the frame, not interpolates into a frame blend. You will revert back to 30fps and the look will marry closer to an animated cartoon, where we fill the gaps, making it more fantasy than real. If playback appears to stutter, try shooting 24p with a really slow shutter so you get lots of motion blur to smooth out playback, when using this technique. You are essentially throwing away every 2nd frame, then repeating each of the remaining frames on playback.

Edit: the above link went dead after a few minutes. Look for "Creating a Cartoon from Video" here.
