1080p FCP 5.1 workflow help - noob

I shot some HVX test footage in 108024pa over the weekend, I thought this camera was great at 720pn but boy am I a happy camper now! The landscape footage I captured definately was an improvement, less compressed, sharper, smaller noise looked more like grain. Yippee. I projected it on my Panasonic video projector and it looked 24p smooth.

I P2 imported it into FCP5.12 and removed the advanced pulldown and then used cinema tools to conform it to 23.98 and made a 23.98 FCP project and it's fabulous. Exactly what I want.

This is where I got stuck. I tried to print it back to video (set the camera to 1080i) but it wouldn't do it. So I changed the view to Firewire HD1080 and could then see it on the HVX and then pressed play and it recorded, yeah, but when I projected it back from the camera it was doubling frames to make the 29.97 format.

In FCP how do I reintroduce the 3:2 pulldown to get it looking smooth like the original 24pa I played out from the HVX? I rendered out the footage then tried bringing it in to a 29.97 timeline but it was jerky and I couldn't find a 23.98 to 29.97 reintroduce 3:2 etc button?

Thanks

Dean

I've been hunting through the manuals and found I think it's something to do with the RT pulldown pattern it's set to 2:2:2:4 and I want 2:3:3:2 But it won't let me change it in the RT section. I says you can change it in the Playback control tab but I'm such a novice I don't actualy know which window that is??? Heaaalp!

Not specifically answering your question but why are you bringing your footage into cinema tools. I shoot 1080 24pa all the time. I just removed advanced pulldown frames in the p2 import and just dropped it in 23.98 timeline. No issues. The footage format says 23.98. It was suggested in the 5.0.4 days to bring it in cnema tools but that was because 1080pa wasn't supported then. I am now importing the footage in FCP 5.1.4 although it worked in 5.1.2 too.

I think it was because I was in a 29.97 timeline when I ran p2 import. Dunno, this is the firest time I tried 1080 24pa. Next time I'll do it from a 23.98 timeline. Anyway how do I change the pulldown patern for firewire output and which is the 'Playback Control tab'?

If I'm understanding you correctly. The way i think I know, never having done it, of printing to video of HD footage through firewire is by using the panasonic DVCPRO AJ-HD1200A firewire deck. If you want to dump your hd footage to the cameras tape drive you would have to convert it to the dv format because the tape drive cannot record HD.

Thanks mico,

I've found in system settings the Playback control tab and there it lets you change the pulldown options for the realtime HD firewire playback. Unfortunately it says that my MBP is not fast enough to change it from 2224 to 2332 pulldown when I print to video. So how do people convert their 24p at 23.98 to 24p at 29.97 for output back to the P2 card in1080i? Cinema tools lets me do a reverse telecine is there a way to add it back in?

Jeez, you're making things difficult. If you want to go to broadcast or back out via traditional methods, tape or P2, don't remove the pulldown on import. If you removed the pulldown on import and no longer have the original frames, you can simply copy your sequence into a 29.97 timeline and render it out. Also you'll get better playback in a 29.97 environment using 1080i/24p as opposed to pa. This mode is best served by the oft dreamed but seldom realized film out. Cinema Tools is just what the name says. You don't really need it for anything other than a true film out, or in as the case may be. Good Luck.

I have the answer!!! Whohooo! I've just upgraded to FCP 5.14!!!

It has the new p2 import viewer and easy setups for 1080pa and 3223 pulldown reinsertion in the rt window for the 23.98fps timeline, yeaaaaaaarrrrrGGG. LOVE IT!

The format of your project has NOTHING to do with what happens in the P2 Import window.
