Just plain weird............

OK, shot a timelapse sunset today and all was normal until I got it home, loaded in the computer and viewed it full size. There are multiple white streaks, like shooting stars, going in all directions - not just down. I saw one or two of the streaks while shooting
but they were somewhat motionless when viewed in real time. And no - I don't live anywhere near Roswell and I've never been abducted by aliens. Just wondering if anyone recogizes these streaks for whatever they are.

I'm going to concur with Eimcd and not put to many brain cells to work on this and call them airplanes.

I assume they are planes too. But I shot this at a frame every 5 seconds, so the entire 8 second clip took 20 minutes to shoot. A plane should be going at least 100 mph. Shouldn't it move a lot faster in a timelapse shot? Hmm... after some basic calculations, maybe not. But where the heck did all these small planes come from, (I counted 12 of them) at 6 pm, over 15 miles south of the nearest airport? Or- maybe a couple of Top Gun pilots circling and appearing in the frame over and over?

Shutter speed was 1/120. Is that fast enough to freeze a plane flying 100+ mph, or would it streak as in the top of this grab? The streak at the top is much closer than the others - if the shutter is fast enough to freeze it - it should be recognizable as a plane.

When you see it with your eye, there's a trail coming off of it. The jet stream is what's creating the streak, only the front tip is the plane. Even at 1/120th of a second, you're capturing a jet stream because it stays there for a long, long time. Either way I think the resulting video looks cool.

Wonder why the trails are not longer? I shot a jet the other day and the trail stretched across the sky and stayed there for an hour.

Looks nice and cozy, are there airports around? We've seen that on Drew's footage. Mad air traffic we never notice. I hope they save me.

these are contrails formed by the mixture of water vapor and jet exhaust...depending on atmospheric conditions, the trails are longer or shorter. the contrails themselves are frozen water droplets (water crystals). when we see the contrails disappear, we are in fact watching the crystals evaporate. these aircraft are flying at nearly the same altitude (only several thousand feet apart)so the trials are uniform.
would be more interesting if they were UFO's but if that were the case we would have seen your footage on CNN or FOX by now. ;)

The footage looks awesome, though. It's like Star Wars or something (I don't know, never really watched star wars)..

how did you never watch SW..

Planes definitely. I've gotten them too. Shot near the airport recently just to get them... I think they look awesome

I agree with Justyn.

Sometimes I set up so my shot includes the flight path to and from our local airport as well.

I'll even do the 2fps hack at night sometimes to get them in their landing patterns and circling the airport. Very cool stuff.

Those are contrails for sure. They're not always long. We saw some last week (from 35k feet) that barely registered visually and we were only 1000 feet above them.

they're aliens. they always ride around showing off this time of year man. they'll do anything for attention i swear.

not planes, planes and a jet, a jet shoots arcross the screen, then we see a lot of small probably single engine aircraft, most are white, all have lights on at this time of day, most are under 7000 feet, and travel between 50 an 1000 miles an hour, the jets that leave the wash, travel much higher, much faster and leave jet washes, you're seeing planes taking off and landing at the airport you mentioned, 15 miles away, there may also be a closer one you dont know about, there are small craft airports all over the place.

if there were UFOs they would be traveling much faster and I know for a fact they cloke, at least they did when they took me, ugly little buggers I tell you. ball caps, rough skin, coveered in facial hair, smelling of jack danels, and man thos probes hurt at first,
