Junipero: The Last Son of Celestie

Marlon,

Thanks for sharing! You have a lot to be proud of, it really looks fantastic. I don't think I've seen much better adapter footage in HD, and you've got some pretty compelling material too.

This is some of the rare 35 adapter stuff that actually feels right and truly enhances the storytelling.

One nitpick: The Cassie character's delivery when she asks him what's wrong feels a little flat. It seems a little too monotone. Other than that, the scene had a very nice natural feel.

Excellent work and I look forward to more.

Glad you liked it. No more clips though, I feel like I'm spoiling the movie!

I think there are some cuts in there that are extranneous and overemphasize unimportant moments, eg. the reverse shot of the kid leaving the room at :30. In other words, cuts of that nature call attention to themselves because they don't quite fit or feel right. I think you can skip a lot of those connective shots entirely, since the audience doesn't need to see him fully exit a room but rather needs to see him exit the original frame.

The rack at 1:30 kinda falls into the same category for me, it feels like an unnecessary cut. Although it's a nice shot, it lacks motivation.

I liked the shot of them leaving the tiled hallway, the final shot of the clip. I also think the operator did a good job with meaty handheld coverage.

The performances are what you'd expect for non-professionals. The girl doesn't work for me at all, but the guy seems strong.

since there was no establishing shot, i put the shot at :30 so I could better orient the room in relation to the area they are in. I tried cutting that out, and it felt like the room was a whole other area which could eventually be confusing in later scenes.

the shot in 1:30 does have motivation, the jacket he grabs has an important item in its pocket that is essential to the storyline, so I defintely wanted to draw attention to it.

I'm glad you thought the operator did a good job because that was me :)

I'm sorry you didn't like the performances, I personally thought they did a good job!

It took about a month before I got mine, worth the wait. I didn't need spacers, in fact, you could get the SD achromat because it works just mine (thats what I use) and save some money. I did two shorts before "Celestie" so I did plenty of "playing around". I use a crappy 7" SD varizoom 16.9 monitor... but it get the job done so I'm happy. - Marlon

Hey Marlon,
I checked out your previous short when you had just finished it, and I really liked it. So I was keeping an eye out for anything else you were working on. This one looks amazing. I almost wish you had the M2 for the previous one also. Keep up the good work.

Yeah, I'm always wondering "what if" we had the m2 for Junipero... oh well... glad your liking this one.

Well, I actually thought you used the M2 in the first movie. You had some great looking short DOF in that movie that made me go "wow, this looks great for an adapter". :P All the shots I see with these adapters are usually too shallow and mushy for my taste.

Wow buddy, you are getting some great footage! Can't wait to see the finished product!

Who's the male character in this clip? He has a great screen presence.
