Amazing film shot by Macgregor w/ DVX+Cinemek

Macgregor, could you please tell us more about the slomotion? The question how you achieved this great looking slomo has bugged me for a long time and I haven't come close to your results with any method out there for SD footage. There's no visible resolution loss and the footage looks progressive so I guess it was shot HD interlaced and deinterlaced/downrezzed in post. If these scenes were shot with the DVX then please tell us your secret.

It's a shame that Cinemek fizzled away. They would have been billionaires.

No not really. it has alot of problems. It Vingettes alot, and it shows static grain when the lens is stopped down past F2.8 ( most lenses only open up to F2.8)

I know a guy who has one. He says it was great when adapter first came out, but now in retrospect it isnt all that compared to newer machines.....

I think that cinemek has MacGregor to thank for nearly all the hype surrounding their maybe-released product. For some reason his exact combination of elements (his lens+the static prototype he owns) produces the same kind of bokeh that expensive 35mm lenses like Ziess or Cookes do. This adds immeasurable value to his productions. As well he is a fantastic DOP, that don't hurt either.

Lenses create bokeh. not adapter screens. he uses Good quality nikon lenses, that produce that bokeh. a thick screen will show the bokeh a bit more, a thin screen will make it washy and smudgy. but thats about it. the GG has little to do with it really.

I don't think this is a dvx. The slo mo looks like it's about 40-50% speed and DEFINITELY progressive. If you have ever done slo mo at 40% speed of material shot at 60i it can't compare. Day and night. Probably hvx.

this was made before the HVX was released.

its DVX 100. possibly Z1 50i deinterlaced to SD 50% slomo for that one shot ( cause i knwo he owns one)

:) I don't know guys. Has this Cinemek ever been sold on the open market. Something isn't right. Breakthrough technology at a time when they could have manopolize the game and then poof. I don't know. Unless they sold the right for a great big payday it don't add up. That clip looks too good for the times when it was introduced.

If I sound like a sceptic it won't be the 1st time. I pray it is the real thing, but with so much mystery.

Please tell me more about these this guy. Please because you all know something I don't.

I want to believe. With footage like that who would wait for RED!:)

But the footage looked better than redrock footage today one a dvx. How can't it be great now?

This is sort of that situation where they say, give an idiot a Panaflex and he will create trash, and give a Genius a Hi8 and he will create art.

I think MAc woulda done fine job with any equitpment really. its his amazing sense of composition is what makes it look so great. Stop focusing on the g35/andromeda/hvx/zi... blah blah... STUDY HIS COMPOSITION, Placment to the sun, HOW HE USES guiding lines in the shot!!!!!

THATS where mac's magic is... it isnt in the piece of wax in a tube.

BEcause most of the footage people have seen is smaller than actual size. When you get to see it in realife it does have flaws. liek any other adapter.

If you liek the G35, look in to the Go35Pro. ITs basically the exact same thing. I have one, its GREAT! but its no Sgpro/Brevis/Mini35.

The static grain is terrible, and the vingetting while controlable is apparent on flat gradients.

I use the Redrock M2. I like it except for thelight lose. How would you rate the M2 along side the sgpro, Brevis, and Mini35?

i ve used all of them, and i own 2 (sgpro/go35). Seriously. there isnt a 35 adapter except the g35/movietube i havent actually used in a produciton. lol

in order: (genuine personal preference)

Sgpro
mini35
Brevis
M2
Go35 (only because its not so good for HD the grain shows up in HD )

Amen!

The M2 would have scored higher, but its very finicky, and it vingetts LIKE CRAZY!!!! It is sharp though, i liek that about it. The Sgpro, is basically, the sharpness of an M2, minus the Chroma abberation, Vingetting and light loss.

Now back to Mac's great movie.

Don’t mean to disagree but….

i dont think so timur,
If you like the G35, look into the brevis

dont believe this to be correct either

Once u get use to the m2 (which might take a while)
you really wont have these problems. You get them from bad setups and/or cheap lenses. I’ve shot with the m2 for a while no CA, or vingetting and have posted footage with a 100 watt light bulb.

Hey all. Just wanted to peek my head in and give a little bit of back story to clear rumors up. "History of Cinemek"
Started in 05' by me and a gent by the name of Doug Hooter. He bowed out and i kept rolling developing the best static adapter I could make. Made a pretty great unit, sold 14 to various people around the globe including Macgregor and Jesse Rosten (elrosten). Soon after the Z1 was released we realized that the G35 was just not good enough (too much static grain) for HD. So, rather than selling a pile of crap to you all and (cashing in) we (we = me and my new partner Gavin Jefferies) decided to go back to the drawing board, this included discussions with Dan Dianconu, which ended up being a total waste of time as well as other "partnerships". We are back to a totally amazing static design made up of our own custom engineered static screen. We are literally moving into our production space over the next few weeks. As always no promises made about shipping dates, but what we can say is that it will blow your socks off. I am a shooter. I work shooting film for a living. I know what I want and I don’t want to sit and fiddle with my camera while the producer is looking over my shoulder waiting for us to start the first shot of the day. The G35 is crazy easy to install, tack sharp edge to edge and loses 2 stops of light. (WHAT?? 2 STOPS OF LIGHT? yes, in order to get the look you all want, you have to lose a bit of light. Sorry all.) We will be selling lights soon, so no worries. And yes, I agree with you all. Macgregor could make a Pxl2000 look like it was shot on the RED. He is in a league of amazing shooters. We are lucky to have him as a part of this community. Please feel free to call me personally @ 206.201.CINE (2463), or hit me up on skype name = cinemek. Cheers, and happy shooting.

So we are talking static HD here, Jonathan?
Or will there only be a SD version...?
Anyways, keep on keeping on - you started it all...
