i remember your screen grabs from awhile back. big congratulations and extreme good luck on the oscar...you have all of dvxuser pulling for you...i know you have to wear a tux, but when you win throw a dvxuser tee :)

Me too. Thats truly outstanding. Must feel so great to put something together that so many people appreciate.

I watched this film a couple months ago here in NYC and it was indeed excellent. Honored to have you in this vitual amateur realm.

wow.

that village voice quote at towards the end of the trailer was massive

huge congrats man, you've done something that is truly remarkable

Well, the cinematography in this piece certainly looks amazing. And you can't go wrong mixing it with the music that you did. I'm not a political person and I don't think I'm ready to take a hard look at what's going on in Iraq. That may sound shallow but I feel like I'm bombarded with the informaton by the media on a day to day basis whether I want to be or not. And that puts me off. But I will definitely check this movie out at some point.

Speaking of, I'm surpised DVXUser has allowed you to post about something so political. If I know the mods, they're hovering over this thread...

Can you hear them?

no politics have been argued.... he's just giving us the lowdown on the trailer being on apple.com

mods can relax and c-c-c-c-chillllll man

I myself am looking forward to watching this at some point. Congrats on the trailer posting and the Oscar nomination. We will be pulling for you.

Yes.

Jarred Land had posted on this project here.
Barry Green started a thread on the Oscar nomination here.

To my knowledge this has never turned political as it should not.

Congratulations on your film! That footage is remarkable and the trailer alone does a great job communicating your feelings for the plight of the people and Iraq as a country.

Just this trailer... it really had an effect on me. The images of the children and the old man hidden in half-light as you hear the commentary about how their homeland cannot simply be divided is saddening.

I cannot wait to see this picture. Thanks for bringing the story home and good luck next month!

Nice job on the trailer (looks like a re-edit from one posted a while ago). We had a great time with Gaza Strip at our documentary film and discussion group in Minneapolis www.firstfridayfilms.blogspot.com. Going to see the film when it plays in Minneapolis. Can't wait to show this one when released!

Thanks for your work.

Well I never watch the Oscars but I will this year :) Good luck... Your film image makes me think my camera is busted :) It really looks good and the trailer is inspiring. wow!

Hi James Longley,

I'm a film student and about 6 months ago, I did a review assignment on your previous feature documentary, The Gaza Strip, for a documentary production class. It may just be an assignment, but watching the film made me understand alot about Mohammed Hejazi and his difficult world. Your artistic style was not only great but also inspiring. Even though this is belated, it's never too late to congratulate you for a great docu film!

Having read the info on your website about the new feature and having seen the trailer, I believe Iraq in Fragments will be another great one for you. It takes alot to accomplish and experience what you have and I wish you all the best for the film and your future endeavours.

I never knew you were a member of the forum but your presence here not only surprised me but somehow elated me as well. It is a rare occasion for me to be able to "speak" to an award winning filmmaker such as yourself and this presents a perfect opportunity to fully express my thoughts and extend well wishes to you.

thanks to everyone for the kind words.

The up-res at Modern Digital was done from a TIFF sequence exported from the FCP timeline; they used their own codec to make the conversion from SD to HD, then the color correction was done on their daVinci 2K system by colorist Bill Lord.

as far as the footage, I find the best way to work with the DVX100s is to always shoot with the aperature wide open, adjusting ND filters and shutter speed to get the right exposure. Having a wide iris helps keep the material looking clean. And shooting in 24pA, of course.

Interesting tip, James. Thanks for posting all the info. Very helpful and I can't wait to see the doc, especially after that trailer. Reminded me a bit of "Baraka" in it's cinematography. I really appreciate that in a doc, as often the cinematography is overlooked in documentaries.

Congratulations!

always shoot with the aperature wide open...
Thanks for the tip. I've always avoided shutter speed for fear of looking too digital. Your stuff looks amazing, though, so I'll have to try it.

Best of luck with the Oscar, and thanks for the inspiration!

This is amazing work James! The pictures and the colors are surreal. Just believing you shooting on DVX100a's would be hard to imagine, but the quality is way over the line. The amount of awards makes this documentary the best there is to date! keep it up.

Awesome! What version of "Final Cut Pro" are you using?
Great job... Looking forward to see the whole movie.

Jim

Ps: Can you send me a email. I have some questions about the movie... Thanks.

Apple.com finally posted the HD trailer for my IRAQ IN FRAGMENTS documentary film.

I originally shot the footage on DVX100 and DVX100A cameras in 24pA mode, letterboxed.

The finished film was blown up to HD for color correction and film transfer. I cut everything in Final Cut Pro.

Can't wait to see this....I'm blown away.....

If you ever make your way up to Bellingham or Gig Harbor let me know....Love to see more of your work!
