My Wish List For Panasonic

Certainly the Delete Last Clip User Button(s).

Certainly To be able to Assign User Buttons to Different Recording Modes each with it's own scene file (and stop insulting us with the toy features currently available to User Buttons).

Certainly 6 Pin Firewire

BUT ALSO:
Record from external mics on all four channels
(What's the point of having four if you can effectively only use two)?

Ability to Keep the Focus Assist Active until I disable it!
(Drives me nuts, this one - blink and it's gone)

A healthy price drop on the HVX200, nothing big, but perhaps a $1,000 - $1,500 drop.

For goodness sake, the only reason this camera doesn't sell for more then $7,000 to $8,000 is because Panasonic had to Force people into P2 technology.
It worked for me and many many others. Finally their R&D into P2 is beginning to pay off.

I told the Panasonic suits that this was my theory at NAB last year. They just blushed, looked at each other and grinned back at me.

If they price it any closer to those "toy" HDV cameras, it wouldn't get enough respect. :)
JMHO.

How about the ability to store focus and zoom settings via a user button?

This is much less likely, but who knows... the ability to ramp framerates in camera would be nice.

I don't want them to drop the price... that's not what we'd want after buying into it...

The hability to use the other two channels is a great territory to explore... however they'd have to use mini-XLR or something like that whatever the tips available that would be smaller are... also they would remein up there in the front... also, there would be no mics in the camera itself... or there would be a little box added to the original mic's casing on bottom of it or off to the side... then again it'd only be one little part that would need to be changed... the plastic tip... then Pana would have to add the option on the menu to turn off/bypass (however it would have to be done) the high-pass and low-pass on the lines... there was a really nice thread where one of the guys here on DVXuser cracked one open and tested the lines, added mics to them... from that thread it seems that it shouldn't be too hard to do... does anyone know if these two tracks are recorded at the same bit ratio? we should ask that on the sound section...

While using the focus assist, move the image in the viewfinder to the lower portion of the screen so I can see the shot and keep the shot composed.

-3 gain.

Ability to use HVX as pass through to HD TVs from laptops, etc.

Focus assist via external monitoring

Bettery power adapter cable.. Its completly wired the wrong side.. and the cable is dental flosh thin and tangles like a mo-fo.

64 gig cards free inside cracker jack boxes!

Actually for focus assist, what I'd like to see 'em do is route the focus assist to the LCD panel, while keeping the viewfinder free of focus assist. That way you could have it active all the time. Heck, take over the whole LCD, as long as I can see the full frame in the viewfinder. That would be great...

Yea... secong that one, that could be done easily giving us one eye on composition and a big focus assist chunk of the frame for the other eye...
Barry, the Focus assist is pixel to pixel right? if so then the most benefit would be found in a bigger portion of the frame being displayed as 1:1 pixels. Or would it be easier for our eyes to see four LCD pixels to one recorded pixel? (if they are square) I'd guess that more of the image would be better than a big representation of a smaller portion of it. Perhaps making the image fout times bigger would make said portion of the image too small to focus in some cases? Looking at the of the amount of the screen taken up by the focus assist function as it is righ now, if it was made four times bigger then the portion of the frame being displayed in it would less than is being displayed currently. Maybe not horizontally...
It might make it hard to focus our eye on it from such a short distance...
How woud you do it Barry?

Originally we thought it was pixel-for-pixel, but apparently not; the manual refers to it as "2x magnification".

I'd go for user-settable magnification. Let it take up the whole screen (external LCD but not VF) and let there be a menu item for like photoshop zooming: 200%, 300%, 400%, whatever.

First, I like the HVX, but since there is always room for improvement:

SDI output sure would be nicer than component. I'm always having trouble with one of the colors dropping out, and it's simply annoying to have to constantly connect and disconnect three BNCs from the camera. Also SDI should provide a higher-quality image, right?

One other important note. I wish the camera was built tougher. I use these cameras all the time, and I've seen so many parts break that it's shameful. Battery tabs, top handles, tripod mounts are all too week to realistically withstand the rigors of film/TV sets. Have you seen the tiny screws that hold the top handle or tripiod mount to the camera? I would be willing to pay a little more for a camera that is built to last.

id like to be able to play back form the p2 cards continuously, and not have to switch formats if i wanna review 1080, then 720, then DVCpro50.

I want the old magnetic style image flipper. this way i can frame while using the magnet trick.

YES!!!!!!!!! this is what i was saying to my AC the other day!!!!!!

HVXs are tough as you get in this price bracket... I'd look elsewear for wishes... but you do have a point if you consider that this might be the simgle prosumer camera being used the most in Hollywood and usually for crazy shots

Im wondering too if any of those upgrade we are discussing about, the ones wich seem doable with a firmware upgrade,is theyre any chance for any of those to actually happen? Is this the kind of thing panasonic would do? or are those firmware upgrades just for bug fixes? Barrys idea for focus assist would be so usefull. For sure no camera is perfect but to be able to improve it without having to buy a new one would be really nice .

The Sony Z1U, while inferior in image quality and other areas, seems to be built tougher.

Not sure I'd agree there - they both have their advantages and disadvantages - but the Z1's Flip-out LCD has more movement and feels less likely to get damaged.

There are several features on the Z1 that I really miss - one is about SIX (or was it 8) really useful Assignable User Buttons - the HVXs are toytown stuff.

Generally, there are many more User-Assignable features on the Z1.

The Z1's Tape Deck door action is far more positive and confidence-boosting but more importantly, there's FAR less motor noise.

The built-in mic on the Z1 was a dream - but I find the motor noise on the HVX makes the built in mic an ornament - why on earth we have Four Audio Channels, when two of them are unusable, I'll never know!

I'd say the Z1 is more user-friendly all round - but it's stuck with HDV . . . (end of debate, as far as I'm concerned)
