HVXs documenting the Iditarod dog race

I am going to be shooting in some pretty cold weather in the coming weeks, I was wondering if there are any specific precautions I should take?

  1. Bring extra batteries, the low temperatures mean that batteries won't last as long.
  2. Be careful about drastic temperature changes. Don't bring a cold object into a warm room, condensation will form on the cold object. You may want to bring an extra-large Ziplock bag (large enough for the camera) and silica gel; put the camera and silica gel into the bag before moving the camera into a warm environment and then let it warm up to the ambient temperature inside the bag.

Cool.

I second THoff statements. Batteries in cold weather, even at 32 degrees or so, very quickly lose potency.

We learned that at a football game playoff in November.

Here is a link for Ziplock Big Bags. They are large enough for the camera, microphone, batteries, FS-100, silica gel etc., and have double heavy-duty zippers and a carrying handle -- less than US$ 6.00:

Panasonic will be offering these as a rebate for all purchases of a US HVX200 through August.

At least that's what the rumor is.

I saw parts of the iditarod a few times when I lived in Alaska. It's pretty wild. That's cool to see about the HVX

Very cool!
I got to shoot just inside the Arctic circle in October with my HVX. Ran like a dream! P2 was wonderful since I didn't trust the temperatures with tape.

And towards the end of the year, bags with twice the capacity should be out (at least that's the word on the street). No information on pricing yet, but it is expected to be comparable to the price of the largest bags available today.

I use the Polar Brace by Portabrace. It worked in temps so cold my eyes were almost freezing. Check it out it is really good.

When shooting P2 in the mountains, I've found battery life to be impressive all the same. Waaay better than shooting to tape. 2 batteries have got me through long days with some charge to spare.

i used the HVX in -6 windchill with a standing temp of +12..... worked liek a charm. i however was shivering uncontrollably.
