What do you use to capture?

Hey guys,

I'm in the market for either the dvx100 or the xha1. My main arguement for the dvx is that i have a smaller model pana camera i can use as a deck to get footage on (that and the easier price tag). I was wondering if there were any cheap alternatives for an hd deck and was curious as to what you guys all use. The jump to hd would most definitly make the shelf life of the xha1 longer than a dvx.

And why haven't they made any dvrack programs for the mac?

Thanks for any suggestions.

The only possible capture deck for the A1 is the $900-1000 HV10 camcorder. Or wait until April and get the HV20 for the same price.

so pretty much everyone that uses this camera captures from the camera?

and realistically if you're not planning to resell the camera, how long could you get away with doing this without killing the heads?

thinking by the SAT's reasoning would the 'don't capture through the camera cause it will wear down the heads' warning be closer to
a) don't drink hydroflouric acid because you will die
or
b) don't eat bacon because it might eventually possibly be linked to giving you a heart attack?

just my opinion

just my opinion

I'd go with the dvx100. My expeirance with the a1 is that nothing works easily. It has been troublesome trying to move my project around in hd to tape and surprisingly it has been even harder to find compatibility with standard def... I think since the dvx has been out longer and hasn't changed much and for this reason it is much more compatible for doing common task.

This probably qualifies to be the most stupid question yet, but is it possible to capture HDV from a DV camera? I'm not talking about 24f/25f, only 50i/60i and 24p/25p.

Not a problem that you have to worry about. Most cameras can log 500 or more hours on the head before requiring maintenance. By then the price would have come down or cheaper alternatives would be available.

There is always the option of a fire store drive.... FS4-Pro HD on ebay $979... Also helps eliminate lengthy capture times and replaces it with short "Copy and Paste" times... : )

For editing Sony Vegas is really great at dealing with mixed multimedia types of files including the xh-a1's .m2t files...
