but to all the non-haters

p.s - that is an octkva in that windscreen, works very well btw

You got some balls man. That actually looks pretty cool to me. If it works for you go for it man.

Maybe companies should think about making add ons like this. Buy the camera for whatever price and you can add whatever cool add-ons you want, it'd be interesting, 3rd parties could do it and everything.

You go dude. I really think it was lame that those guys dissed you for sharing your experiment. It may look funky, but I don't see where you've hurt the original equipment at all and you've at least tried to make the camera work better for what you need.
Let's all face it; Canon has let us down severely in the LCD department and any body that wants to seriously use this camera has to come up with an alternative viewfinder. I'm trying to rationalize the bucks for a Marshall, but I sure wish there was something cheaper that worked as well.

P.S. I'm thinking about those helmet mounted displays the military uses worn over one eye and wired into the camera. :-)

Looks good to me. Not sure why anyone would care what you do with your camera. If a mod makes your final video look better, that's all that matters.

exactly. the final product is all that matters.

Thanks Guys,

it really is useful, I was never a big fan of shooting with elephant nose type cameras - I always liked the viewfinders on the side with a big eyecup. It just gives a different sense of shooting with only your eyes through a small hole.

I am really digging the resolution, it is a JVC VF-P115 viewfinder with 600 lines, but with the Canon BNC out, it is only 480i lines coming out, but it is better than the LCD or EVF which has bout 320 lines of rez? correct me if I am wrong

before you didnt say it was 600line rez, now i understand what the point of it is. :) So now may i ask how you did it? What wires did you splice?

Phally, I can respect what you're doing even if it's not something I would personally do.
Sorry if it came across as a dis, but I couldn't help but laugh when I saw it.

If that JVC has peaking of its own I could see how it would be more useful, but the LCD transmits the camera's strong peaking function which I find to be tremendously helpful.

To each his own, baby!!

No diss taken Elton, in fact I was humored and honored as well with your pictorial responses. but the viewfinder does not have a peaking feature of its own, while other newer model do.

But the thing that I do not understand is that the peaking does not show on viewfinder . When I attached a very low res LCD, the peaking shows so I guess it is a Video-out limitation

I do belive that I am using 480 vertical resolution of the viewfinder with some more to boot because there is another model that boasts 720 lines. More research will help but I am getting a much sharper image with the viewfinder than the standard EVF.

from the BH website

A JVC rep sent me the pinout, if people want to know, I'll gladly share

quick google gives you: http://members.aol.com/ajaynejr/vidres.htm

relevant info:

While all (NTSC) TV sets and program material (broadcasts, tapes, disks, etc.) use the same 525 scan lines, the advertised resolution (240, 425, 500, etc.) refers to the horizontal resolution which is the number of side by side dots that can be reproduced within any one scan line. The number of scan lines is the limit for vertical resolution, the number of dots in a column that can be reproduced.

thanks Geoff

so each line has about 600 pixels each with about 480 v. lines

so what does the math show us? about roughly 300,000 pixels? that should make it less than the total pixels on the LCD, and EVF - but why does it look sharper? subjectivity? there has to be some more magic

Too bad you can't take the old EVF out. I'd look more natural.

I think it's a great idea and would surely aid in manual focusing.

RED has their EVF at 720.

Hello Phally,
great work! I wanted to do the same with my DVX-100, but will definately do it on my XH-A1. Almost any "outdated" B/W tube-viewfinder will do better than this LCD s***.
Got a viewfinder today from ebay (Sony DXF-M3A, about 20 years old for about 20$, looks like the JVC)
How did you rig yours to the camera? Does anybody know the pinout for the Sony Viewfinders? It is 8 pins, seven pins round one centered pin.
All the best, Frame
