P2 glitch similar to 'tape hits'

Whats with all the sudden P2 issues lately. It seems they haven't surfaced in this magnitude until now. I hope this wont be an often occuring thing. Tapeless is great but if errors happened with my footage ide be haunted everytime Ide record something I knew was important.

I'd say to try and PM or contact Jan. I haven't had any issues in 10 months of shooting extensively. My trust level is very high .

Contact the dealer you bought it from, See if it is a servicable issue as you still are under warranty. It could possibly be a camera issue if you keep having problems.

or has my HVX raped me prison style once again?
No, the MAC has raped you prison style once again. This is a well-known and well-documented problem. Apple's support is glitchy. In fact, I'll go so far as to say that every one of your problems that you repeatedly post about is because you're using the Mac.

Quit blaming Panasonic and put the blame squarely at the feet of the only people who can fix this: Apple.

Maybe we should do a poll like:
How many people that have had this problem, have any software with the name "NORTON" installed on their mac.

Is it possible I've got a lemon?
Maybe. But I think you're blaming the wrong fruit. It's because you have an Apple that these things are happening to you.

Do yourself a huge favor -- try your next small project 100% PC-based. Use Avid or EDIUS or something like that. I bet a hundred bucks cash that all your problems will disappear.

Anybody know of a good contact at Panasonic that might be able to help me resolve some of these issues?
The best one to start with is to PM Jan Crittenden. However, it isn't her fault, it's Apple's fault. Only Apple can fix the things that are happening to you.

Brilliant -- we should definitely do that. It could very well be something like that!

I'd rather give up cinematography for life than use a PC - and I'm serious about that.
And therein lies the problem, and why Apple doesn't bother fixing it. If you'd rather embrace a flawed system and blame anyone who points out its flaws, rather than use a working system -- what incentive is there for Apple to change? Simple fact is that there's a bug. This is not a "PC is better than Apple" issue. This is a "there's a bug in OSX and it needs to be fixed" issue. And it won't be fixed until users like you start screaming bloody murder in Apple's ears, demanding that they fix it.

I don't understand how it's Mac's fault when I take a P2 card from a camera, put it in a PCMCIA slot and it's blank and/or scrambled when it gets there.
Because Apple's P2 driver doesn't always work. Seems to work about 99% of the time, but there's always that 1%. Kevin Railsback can demonstrate the same thing -- he puts the card in his PowerBook, plays the footage, and can see glitches happening. Put the card back in the camera and play the footage, and guess what? It's flawless. There's something wrong with the way the Mac interfaces with the cards. The data on the cards is fine. The process of transferring that data to a Mac can glitch.

but transferring 1's and 0's from one drive to another isn't an OS conflict - it's a hardware problem. My Mac isn't writing anything to the card - it's READING FROM IT. If somebody hands me a book with pages missing is there a problem with my ability to read?
Put the card back in the camera and play the footage, and guess what? ALL the pages will be there. The Mac doesn't know how to read.

Apple needs to fix it.

P.P.S I'm not blaming Jan - I just want somebody who knows the system to help me make it work.
I'm telling you how to make it work. You just don't like the answer -- if you want a flawless experience, use a PC; that system works. Apple has a bug and they need to fix it.

Now -- let's take the other possibility, the possibility that your camera or cards really are faulty. When you import a card and it's glitched, I want you to IMMEDIATELY put that card back in the camera and play that same footage, and see if it's glitched on the card. If it is, then you have either a bad camera or a bad card, and Panasonic owes you warranty repair service. But if the footage plays perfectly on the camera, then you know without a doubt that it's your Mac that created the glitch. And Panasonic can't do a thing about that -- only Apple can.

Sounds like the comments of a Mac addict and not a filmmaker...

how misguided and sad.

I agree. I love my Macs but that is taking it way too far. Definitely the wrong attitude.

No. Most HVX users do in fact use Macs. I attended an HVX Bootcamp in Burbank last year, and upwards of 80% seemed to use that platform (based on an informal show of hands).

Regardless, there are problems with Macs and P2, and Apple also has a bug in FCP 5.1.2 that causes both failure to import clips altogether, as well as wrong framerates to be detected in those clips. The Mac isn't perfect, you know...

Jimmy I am a Mac user too but apparently there are bugs in the two systems working together. I think this issue is important enough for us to contact Apple and see what can be done about it. I love my Mac as well but in a crunch I would use anything that can get the job done. Peace!
