Envision & RebeccaD Present "Where Silence Falls"

Damn good. Some of these dvxusers are really talented! I was transfixed from start to finish. Definitely delivered what drama should deliver.

Something you've done here that none of the others I've seen so far have done. Create something that feels like a six minute movie, rather than six minutes OF a movie. Very well done. Composition and editing were great as well, for the most part. I had a very minor problem with the editing of the series of shots going door to door. Other than that, outstanding job.

Is there a breakdown of Shawneous' audio equipment somewhere in this thread?

Edit: And you know what? A great effort poses great debate. And I'm back with another question.

Norm, did "Eric" walk up to the nextdoor neighbors house with his son's ball? Was that the first house he went to?

Thank you Sean & VisionLake! We appreciate your comments and feedback!!

Kholi, I am not sure if Eric walked up to Bill's house first, but I see how it could be interpreted that way....I'll let Norm address that one because I wasn't out there for those series of shots. The day we were shooting it was like 18 degrees!! Brr...

Norm...
I've gone through a few films and this one so far kicks some butt! The story is what's going to hit it huge. I only wish I could have been part of it too :)

Loved it,

Another high quality entry...this fest sure is a treat.

I enjoyed this from start to finish, with the the punching scene pulling me out a little. Having watched a couple of your of pieces Norm, I agree that this seems a significant step for you. FWIW I'd be interested to see you go with a little silence hear and there, maybe just use ambient sounds or silence itself to help tell the story. Subjective feedback of course - and maybe this story didn't call for it. Congrats on a solid entry.

VisionLake hit it on the nose. Felt like a complete movie.

I guess I must be getting older, because I really appreciate the understated use of angles and shot selection. It was very subtle, which seemed to work well with the story. The color was really nice as well...or lack thereof.

I think as filmmakers reviewing filmmakers we can always find things to nit pick at, but this was very polished all around. An edit nip and tuck here, maybe a bit of silence there (like mentioned before). Again, all nit picking not meant to take away from the inherent goodness. :)

The acting was pretty good. Something that is lacking in most smaller, budget productions. Maybe just a couple of beats were off to me, but not enough to even complain about. You put together a good cast and just from what I've seen of Rebecca, she's finding deeper skills. She's one to watch.

Thanks for such a great entry.

Jason

This movie felt very professional. And with the story and dialog you had that's saying alot. I wouldn't even attempt something like that right now. Very talented group you got here. Thanks for a great movie.

Where Silence Falls . . .

great job - everyone who worked on this project knew what they wanted to do and how to do it. I was really looking forward to this film and it didn't dissapoint. this cast and crew are top notch, I'm looking forward now to your feature.

 10 out of 10.

I have not read any other comments but I really liked this short. The opening titles looked pro, great depth of field in the kitchen shots and the audio was the best I have heard so for. I like the steadycam shots too. The acting was good with Norm and Rebecca because you kept it subtle when it would have been easy to take it over the top based on the subject matter but I felt you guys reacted how most parents would. Stressed big time on the inside but still trying to hold it together on the outside. I thought the sex offender guys part was a little over-acted but that is my only negative.
This one is at the top of my list so far. If you guys ever do something in Seattle I would love to work with you.

Thank you so much! Hey, Seattle is not too far,so we'll see! Thanks so much for the review/comments.

Wow. Thank you very much, Preson! I am planning on viewing and commenting on your thread soon! :)

Rebecca, all I'm gonna say is: you're hired. I don't know for what yet, but ... man, I gotta put you to work in something. That was nearly gold all the way through, although like Kholi I kind of didn't buy the ultimate cry/freakout part, but overall you really brought it. If I were handing out awards for "best actress" in the DVX DramaFest, you'd absolutely get a nomination, and after I rewatch a few, you may get the trophy.

Norm, for acting you were okay. Not the best, but probably a darn sight better than most of us would be able to pull off. I agree that it was probably a case of Rebecca blowing you off the screen. :) It was a bold move to put yourself in your own film, and it turned out fine.

Congrats on your best fest entry ever. And now we're all really looking forward to your SpyFest entry!

Barry, I just re-read your post from last night. I was a little tired at that point, but want to thank you again for your in-depth review and the nice compliments on my acting. :) Norm speaks so highly of you that I would be honored to be involved in something with you in the future!! Again, much appreciated and well-taken.

Thank You Everyone!!

Thank You Everyone!!

I just got to the hotel room here in Miami, and have to scoot out in a bit for a group meeting with our new boss, but wanted to say thank you to everyone that's posted here today (and the previous days).

I'll see if I can comment on some of them in more depth later, but for now I wanted a blanket 'Thank you' to at least cover it. I was also able to finally watch all the rest of the DramaFest films on the flight over here, so I'll look forward to commenting on everyone's threads throughout this week.

Kholi, with regards to your question, yes, it is Bill's house that I go to first. In the extended cut it would have shown me knocking at the door but no answer. Not a big deal at the time, since I wouldn't suspect anything. When my character goes back later, he does answer (whether he was home before, in the shower, etc. would be irrelevent). For the fest cut, we obviously had to cut things way back, but still had to show my character picking up the ball.

Brandon, I think total budget (majority of which was food) was around $415.

Oh, and, um ... yeah, that's a package deal there, Barry. Got to bring me in on that project somewhere as well.

Best Envision production I've seen yet. This might be an unfair assesment as I've only seen the short herofest entry of Sparrow not its final release.

Style remains consistent with previous productions with meticulous camera work and professional production values.

Norm and Rebecca take on a fiercly debated social, ethics issue and roll it into a clearly told parable designed to challange the viewers thinking.

Congratulations to Norm and Rebecca for their most successful effort yet in the most challanging of the DVXuser festivals to date.

JAE, dogs bark, it's realistic. Do you realize how long it took to get the dog to bark on que like that, but at a volume low enough to still hear Rebecca? I'm just pissed that swell dog didn't get a credit.

Yep, indoor scenes was the AKG ck93 with Rycote shockmount and BBG, outdoor was the Sennheiser MKH60 inside a KTek KZep. All of this was piped through my Sound Devices SD302 mixer and tape out to a Marantz pmd660 CF card. We then did a copy of the audio out a wireless into the camera, but that signal kept getting interrupted by the wireless video, so Norm had to use the cf files exclusively.
