EIGHTEEN SECONDS by Jack, Zac and Mac

Would love any more details about the production you care to share.

Yeah, any more details you care to share would be great- especially how you accomplished the car hit when doing it run and gun style- that makes that scene even more impressive to me!

Yeah, could you please say how you shot that? Shoot yourself first rolling on the ground and then the car passing by? You composed in Shake?

Just being curious, was the car driver so. you knew or you just waited for the first car to pass by?

I thought the first 95% of this was brilliant. Blew me away. This film was bordering on genius for me until the car hit at the end. It felt manipulative and even comical which didn't match a very serious nuanced effort. I absolutely loved the look of this film and thought the acting was incredible if not heartbreaking. I would take out the car crash, and have the girl walk on not hearing him and then have him put the glove in his pocket and turns the corner. Just me.

All and all congrats, a lot of talent in this.

No, I mean HVX. I might just be blind, but the HVX ain't the sharpest tool in the shed. It's totally fine, I'm just saying that it didn't have the standardized HVX look.
Don't confuse the look the camera is capable of with the look that some people get out of it. Look at the 720p version of Katrina, for example. The HVX is as sharp as you want it to be, even with a good adapter.

I agree Barry

This film could have been 35mm and no one would ever know; except the scrutinizing eye and even then ....

Yeah i think some softeness comes from the fact that focussing is tougher with the HVX than DVX, esp without an external monitor. So a lot of footage people see is slightly off.

But it CAN be done with just Focus Assist, as this project was. It's just a matter of not trusting the LCD without focus asssist.

Or a DVX and the damn Letus

(cough cough)

Mac is in my TOP 3 currently (i'm juggling this decision)

There are a lot of great films here but if we luck out ...
It is Mac and Zac's baby so they will get any prizes.
Just like on my past fest entries those were my babies so I kept the prizes.
Anything Mac can't use, that's not compatible with his gear for example, he will probably give to me since Zac is not a shooter. Then again maybe he will sell it since the trip cost him a lot. I am happy just to have worked with these guys so I can learn. Anything else is gravy.

Speaking of which, it was pretty fun to see these Spaniards scarf down gravy for the first time ever in Nevada ... and then to see their faces when I told them what they were eating - which is basically animal fat, grease, and flour, lol.

I'm back again to say that I loved your film!! I had my husband watch it and he was equally impressed. I loved it even more the second time! All I can say is, wow....

Sorry I will tomorrow. I am supposed to be working for Barry Green right now, which I am. If I post to much he will now I am playing hooky. But I will give you a good answer with the raw clips I composited tomorrow or the next day. Basically it involved rotoscoping me from this blooper shot and rotating me as the car ran over me in Motion.

OK - really behind the curve here and only now just starting to watch the entries. No surprise this one was the first. And I simply haven't had the time to read through the previous posts, so if I'm redundant in my comments, forgive me.

Soooo ... on my left is a stack of comments the height of sixteen NYC telephone books on the stuff I loved about this short. On my right is a flimsy pamphlet of the stuff I didn't like.

So lacking the time to go through the HUGE pile of stuff that I loved, let me talk about the stuff I didn't like ...

1. The "Oops I opened the camera and light got in and partially exposed the film - silly me - tee hee" effect. Why? Took me entirely out of the story (HEY! This isn't really happening! It's a freaking MOVIE!). Really didn't like that.

2. The heartbeat. I've heard them before, and I'm not a doctor. And one of my favourite shorts from a previous fest gave me my fill of heartbeats. So now I have an adverse reaction. To me, heartbeats are a cheat. Hate 'em.

3. Poor ol' JDS got schmucked by a 1/4 ton vehicle traveling at full speed and he didn't show a scratch. His glasses slipped a little, but that was it. It would have been a great contrast to have the female lead's pristine condition counterpoised by a really brutally injured JDS. A little blood. A bruise or two - hell - even some dirt - or heaven forbid the cliche cracked lens of his glasses. (Now I'm really digging deep for criticisms). On the verge of not buying the scene.

4. JDS' masterbation scene. At the office? Really? Doesn't that run the risk of removing that character into the "creepy" category (while our female lead maintains our empathy by utilizing somewhat traditional locales)? Maybe in a private booth in a peep show, but in his office? Ewwwwwww.

So that's it for criticisms.

Now let me say that if I had three percent of the talent of these guys, I'd be a happy boy. And the acting talent (particularly the female lead) was simply wonderful. A beautiful short I will watch again.

Cheers.

And thanks for the inspiration.
