Datarate on the fs-100 with the firmware update

Anyone know if the firmware update on the fs-100, which is supposed to remove the pulldown flags before writing the footage to the hard drive will reduce the datarate since it is actually not recording all the frames, reducing the amount of space the footage takes up?

I know the 720p native on the hvx is similarly designed so you are able to get more footage onto the p2 disks, I would think this firmware update will allow more footage at 24p onto it.

Currently they state you can get 90 to 100 minutes. I know in native mode, the p2 cards get about 2 1/2 minutes per GB. I am wondering if this is a safe assumption that this ratio would work for 720p 24p footage on the fs-100.

If not, any idea on how many minutes we might get with the firmware?

Cool, thanks!

I believe you are right. We will be getting about double the minuets with the new firmware update. Hope its out soon!

Will be out VERY soon, working out the bugs first.

The FS-100 will hold more with the 3.0 firmware update in either P2 Native or QuickTime Native modes. The numbers will be the same as on a P2 card, it's all the same data on either device.

Interesting, are you saying the fs-100 will be able to support 720p native now, where the camera removes the flag within? I have read in many places that the purpose of the firmware upgrade was that the camera cannot export the native over firewire, and the 3.0 upgrade will remove the flags to get around this issue, giving more space and less post production processes.

I like that we will be able to get more space, but shooting in the native modes is nice too!

Cool

Date rate at 720/24p (equivalent N) = 49.10 mbits/sec.

Ben says "native," but it is not native in the sense that it records to the p2 card. It is the equivalent.

More than three hours of continuous footage this way.

Panny did not give the HVX the ability to stream Native mode via firewire. It's not that it's not possible, Panny just put a flimsy 4-pin FW connector on the camera (why not the very solid 6-pin, space is not problem), and doesn't allow Native modes, nor HD playback go go over Firewire. Not sure why, they just didn't think many folks would use the FW connector as much as they are, I guess.

So, the data stream on the FW cable is the same, no matter what. The FS-100 3.0 will do the pulldown removal on the fly, recording the same Native P2 file as the HVX records to the P2 card. PLUS it will record, on the fly, QuickTime Native, which the HVX can't do on it's own.

so, by this math, 49.1 mb/s equals 6.1375 mB/s which is 368.25 mB/min.

So on the 100gb hard drive, we are looking at about 278 min of footage, or about 4 hours and 38 min?

Is that sound right? It seems like 49.1 mb/sec seems looks low for hd?

THe big reason i am curious is I want to make sure I will be able to get at least a few hours on the fs100 since when shooting, if I need a laptop and external hd to backup to, if I can get this 4 hours and 38, i wont need it, since i dont see shooting that much footage in a day.

curious, does anyone know of a site or document that gives the actual captured data rates of hd footage, which includes timecodes, audio and other info? I know when you shoot at 720p 24fps, it would actually be 40 mb/sec for just the video stream, but like said above, with all the other stuff added, 720p at 24 is 49.1 mb/s, I want to know how he got that # or find where I can get #s like that.

I have had a tough time finding numbers of actual rates for hd, like the standard 3.6 mb/sec for DV, which includes audio and other info.

Thanks!
