wait until NAB2007 before you buy !!!!

I asked my dealer for a quotation update for the HVX and other equipment. He told me that due to possible announcements at the NAB2007 regarding "new developments" he could not give me a sharp price yet. I also requested a HVX with a 7 as second digit in the serial number. The availability of the HVX at the importer with such a seriel number is questionable. Will Panasonic surprise us at the NAB2007 with a small updated HVX ?????? Improved LCD, more frame rates, better noise reduction algorithm would be nice :love4:

I doubt there's any change with the HVX happening, but there's lots of new things coming -- HPX2000, HPX500, and some new "mystery" 2/3" camera Jan hinted at. Plus NAB should finally show the 16GB cards, so my guess would be that the 8GB card is indeed due for a price plunge, but keep in mind that NAB is three months away. You can make a lot of money in the video business over the course of three months.

So if you don't need it, wait until you do. If you do need it, get the best that's available now and put it to work.

Agreed. Over the years we've seen people shelf many great ideas or lose gigs waiting for something 'better'. Get what you can when you can and don't look back.

Really??? Hmmm . . . the HPX500 was a nice bit of news in and of itself. As you pointed out earlier--THAT would''ve been my dream camera had RED not been underway. I have no idea what "other" 2/3" product Panasonic may be announcing at the show??? I wonder how it's differentiated among the rest of their new product line-up? What would your guess be, Barry?

Regardless of whether the HVX-200a is going to be released with small improvements (which I belive it probably WILL even though the pipeline between development and distribution seems to be moving slow these days) or not, anyone that is looking to make a major purchase would have to be desperate to do it right now. NAB is certain to suprise and wow us. And probably make our HVX-200 look a little less advanced. Technology seems to do that.
JUST WAIT!! With all the new improved competition, even if the "a" is not released the prices are certain to continue dropping.

A guess? VariCam II. I mean, what else can it be? They've got the low end covered with the teenage VariCam (HVX = baby VariCam, HPX = teenage VariCam); they've got the HPX2000 and HDX900 covering the full-on professional category, and -- well, the VariCam's looking a bit long in the tooth. All their other products are 1080 & 720, only the VariCam's 720-only, so... I'm thinking it might be time for a big shakeup on the top end of the lineup.

I'm just hoping that they'll give us a solid AVC-HD camcorder for the DVX-caliber customers. I'd say probably only about 20% of our overall membership could afford one of the 2/3" cams, even the HPX, but 80% of our membership would probably be very interested in a 1/3" AVC-HD version of the DVX. Haven't heard the slightest inkling of a rumor from them though, so I don't know if anything's on the way, but that's the one that I think would really shake things up around here!

That would be neat. Nice little DVX-AVC-HD mutant to add to the arsenal.

I've heard the "mystery" camera described as a HVX200 on steroids, but basically nothing revolutionary, with the main difference being a shoulder mount version of the 1/3" HVX. I haven't heard anything about a third 2/3" camera but then I'm not in the loop.

I agree that you shouldn't spend your life waiting for the "next big thing" but should get the equipment when you need it. I held off buying a camera for a long time because I could always use my school's DVX. When the HVX200 came out, it because clear it was time to finall shell out the cash and start working. I delayed the purchase a month so I could see how NAB 2006 turned out and then happily plopped down the cash (which was actually great since I got the B&W NAB discount). Maybe Panasonic will release something new but I doubt anything is going to really change the ball game as far as the HVX200 price range goes. Canon has already released the A1. Sony released their little progressive camera. Panasonic no doubt wants the HVX200 to remain a hot item as long as the DVX100 was. They're not gonna release something to make it obsolete in its price range.

I heard the new HVX would have a 1080p 60 recording mode.. Oh wait.............. that was for NAB 2010. :nads:.

All joking aside, I suspect ~2010 is about right for 1080P 60 recording for the peasants (i.e. sub $7K).

Barry could it be that the HPX500 is the 2/3" camera Jan was hinting at? After all it is a HVX200 on steroids. It does all the same formats and frame rates and has 5 P2 slots.

And even if they announce a new HVX it will be at least 6-10 months before they actually sell it to us. So waiting is not an option if you need it....

Ahhh . . . wasn't thinking of the high-end. Good call. I bet you're right!

No, because we already knew about that one. She said three new 2/3" cameras, and I said "three? there's the hpx2000, the hpx500, what's the third one?" and she just winked and said "you'll see at NAB" or something like that.

I think Jan said they won't be updating the HVX this year, and that long GOP doesn't do 24P any favors. Maybe that's why Canon is sticking with frame mode and the new progressive Sonys' are having troubles. As far as the AVCHD DVX, I hope it happens but if it is AVC-Intra and uses P2 cards, then where's it going to fit into things? If it's priced under $4,000 to compete with the Canon A1, won't Panasonic feel they'll be cutting into the HVX sales? Maybe Panasonic will just release a HVXa in 2008 with AVC-Intra included as an option. Personally, I hope Panasonic DOES come out with a new camera that competes with the Canon A1, but there's been no talk or rumors, to this effect.

Nope, I'm asking for AVC-HD (not AVC-Intra) and recording to standard cheap SD cards, not P2 cards. That's the camera that I think would be killer. AVC-HD at 8 megabits can deliver image quality about comparable to HDV at 25 megabits, so you could store a good amount of HDV-caliber footage (about an hour on a 4GB SD card). And if you crank it up to maximum bitrate (24 megabits) it should look substantially better than HDV, and you'll still get 16 minutes on that card. It's tapeless and would have a similar workflow to the HVX/P2, but AVC-HD isn't DVCPRO-HD so it'd still be a rung lower on the ladder.

AVC-Intra's a whole different ball of wax, a 10-bit 4:2:2 I-frame-only codec that starts where DVCPRO-HD leaves off, and scales up to at least 100 megabits for HD-D5 quality pictures. That's the format the new big shoulder-mount cameras are using; AVC-HD is an 8-bit 4:2:0 long-GOP codec designed to replace HDV.

I agree with villeluna.

Use the HVX now, and wait until NAB if RED is delivered. At that point P2 cards probably will be slashed in price, making the HVX, probably, the only "cheap" HD camera of interest for us. If the RED will be delivered, all other offerings will appear, to wanna be filmmakers, unactractive. If the RED is not delivered, you can go on using the HVX and start thinking about the HPX 500, knowing that your P2 investment is protected.

And I'd imagine as hard to edit as HDV.

Wondering if this formats has to be conformed like HDV does.
