Envision & RebeccaD Present "Where Silence Falls"

Always nice to hear when you can be an inspiration, Brandon, thanks.

BUT ... you're wrong about the green screen key ... that's impossible ... because I used a blue screen!

Right now I'm more nervous about the rough cut of the film, as I've not heard from Dan yet & I'm wanting to have the locked edit to Justin by this Friday night.

So you are not doing the edit, are directly involved at all? Or are you giving him free license to edit and then you will give your comments/feedback for the next round of editing?

Did you turn over the editing duties because it was shot on the HVX and you are on a PC with Vegas? Or is it because you intend to use this person to edit TRINITY RIVER?

Either way, I'm definitely looking forward to it...and to the completed BTS piece.

Peace,
Larry

Just putting the finishing touches on the BTS (well, rough touches at least) now, and should be able to render & have it up in a little over an hour or so.

Oh, Brandon, when I have screengrabs I'll see about putting a couple up ... but as of right now, I don't have a single frame of footage as it's all at Dan's, (our DP) place.

As far as the actual editing of the footage, yep, it's because I'm on PC/Vegas and we shot with the HVX. Until Vegas has a native solution for the HVX, I'd rather have it cut on a Mac, though it kills me not to be intimately involved with the editing (from beginning to end) like I'm used to. But, this IS a good excercise to get used to for larger projects when I may not want to or can't be the editor as well.

For TRINITY RIVER, I'm assuming there will be a work around by that point (or native solution), so I'm still planning on editing the feature ... that and the fact I don't think anyone else worth their weight would be willing to do it for the pennies we have set aside in the budget for it.

I DID hear from Dan last night (after I posted), and he was still uploading the footage ... so I may try & scoot over there sometime today & take a look at the progress, with tomorrow having some time spent over there for the final lock.

I've not kept up with the HVX/PC situation so maybe this has been covered before...wouldn't it be possible for you to get a rendered version of the footage that would load into Vegas? Then you could cut it and when satisified with it produce an EDL that can be brought into whatever NLE the final cut is done on?

You're speaking Greek to me, Larry. Perhaps if I've taken some class before & knew what you were talking about, I'd be on board ... but I'm 100% self taught with editing & still learning as I go ... so currently wouldn't have a clue how to do what you're talking about.

Wow, this thread's gotten busy the past day! Norm, I'm downloading your BTS stuff now. Can't wait to check it out...

Thanks Tommy. I just finished the enter BTS clip, a little over 8:30 long, and am rendering out an uncompressed AVI of it now, which I'll use to quickly render out other files (iPod version for Rebecca & others, etc.).

As soon as I get the master rendered out, I'll do a WMV and QT version to get up online in a few hours.

I could have spent more time on CC (well, actually any time), but I think it lends better to the BTS feel to have stuff not match, etc.

I am excited to see this Norm but I am posting more about your iPod comment. Today, I put a rough cut of TTN on my iPod and took it to the gym to watch and analyze. Wow. How cool was that!!!

You do have to forgive me because I have only had an iPod since Christmas (thanks to my wonderful wife who surprised the hell out of me!!!) and have never seen video on it before. Wow! Very cool. Great display, considering.

Again, looking forward to your bts vid.

Hey Norm, I'm impressed. That looks very well put together. I think you could show this to an investor and have them interested in this project from a funding perspective. Not saying that you'd do that, but if you put the same quality into your Trinity River pitch, then I'm sure you'll have no problem with your backing for that project.

Yeah Ted, EVERYTHING looks incredible when compressed down to a two inch screen! Love the way the videos look on the iPod. I've got to get one for myself soon ... on my to-do list ... maybe if I wait long enough 'someone' will get me one for my B-Day.

Thanks, Tommy. I WOULD do that ... in fact I plan to ... just because if for no other reason I think the BTS has a nice dramatic feel to it & therefore carries some production value, most all of which of course is due to Justin's music.

Okay, I'll be offline for a while now as my system hogs all the resources to render out the AVI ... I've got to upgrade this thing soon.

Well, I've not had any more training than you, and I'm not 100% sure I said things correctly, but let me see if I can better explain what I mean (in case it might work and be helpful).

The problem, as I understand it, with HVX and Vegas is not that Vegas can't work with/process the footage, but that it can't process the native footage straight off the P2 cards. If the footage is converted/rendered/whatever'd into a format that Vegas understands then you can work with the footage...right?

Now, I'm assuming there are other advantages, as well, in editing the final cut on a Mac based system. But if you wanted to be able to do the edit yourself, I would think you could have the footage rendered to a proxy (a low-resolution version of the footage that matches up in the timecode) so you could import that into Vegas and edit it.

Once you are done, you get Vegas to generate an EDL (Edit Decision List) which details the clips utilized, and the start/end points of the specified clip. I believe Vegas generates a standard EDL which would be understood by other tools (e.g. Final Cut, etc). You could then import that EDL into the Mac NLE which would use that information, against the actual footage from the P2 cards, and generate the edit.

I hope that makes more sense....I don't know if it would work or not, or if it is feasible. Maybe the way you are going about it is ultimately better, I'm not sure. Just a thought that flew through my head so I decided to pass it along :)

Now, Where's that final BTS video?

Thanks, Larry! So the person on the Mac side would be the one to render out the 'proxy' from the P2 data, right? I like the sound of it, though we're hitting a crunch time now, and not sure there would be time to implent that for this short.

My main PC (using my wife's now) is showing another 15+ minutes left in the render, but that's only for the uncompressed AVI ... I still have to then render out a web version in WMV (QT later in the day/night as time allows) & then upload that. If I can SQUEEZE it I will, but other wise supposed to be meeting a friend at the gym in about 15-20 minutes. We've been putting it off all days because for the third day in a row our schools have cancelled due to snow/ice, so we've had to work around the kids' schedules (or lack thereof) today.

Thanks, Rebecca.

Sorry, folks ... the AVI is done now, but the WMV is saying it's going to take nearly 30 minutes, so I'll have to upload it when I get back. Meaning I'll have it up more likely around 4pm or so. I want to have a good larger size file for viewing, so this first one will likely be upwards of 80MB for download (640 wide, 8:35 long). I'll render out some smaller WMV and QT files tonight when I update the main front page, so those should be more in the 30-40MB size, I think.

While I know this BTS will have more impact on the cast/crew when they see it, I still think it'll move/inspire some of the DVXuser crowd that wasn't involved as well ... I'm pretty pleased with it.

Brandon, you changed your avatar! I like this one much better, good choice ... makes you look older.

Uploading the file now: www.eefilm.com/silence/bts/video/silencebts-lg.wmv

It's a HUGE fatty file at about 97MB .... BUT, I think I can say it's worth the download to view. I have an insane amount of bandwidth, so I don't even mind folks just streaming it from the server (click on link to view vs. right click & save as), if they want.

I'll get smaller versions compressed out throughout the night & update the main page with them.

Hope you all like it!!! Feel free to give feedback of any serious edits that need to be done, as I'll likely show it to some investors as well.

Oh, uploading now, so that link will be fully active in about 30+ minutes.
