Curious, what lens do you use with the M2?

It's like a nice satisfying piece of chocolate cake with crack sprinkles

On the fourth episode, we used a 135mm f2.8 for the tight opening shot, a 35mm f2 for the wider opening shot, an 85mm f2 for my CU and a 100mm f2.8 for Sean's CU.

That kept me in for the rest of it and as soon as my bandwith clears up I'll be watching the rest. I do have a question: There's a black bar that looks like something was in front of the lens in the first portions, and then some "vignetting" at the corners. Is that because of the lenses being used? Or were you not zoomed through far enough? Or is that actually where the lighting falls off? Hate to be nit-picky, just something I noticed that's all.

Also, is there another thread around that tells what mics you're using? Sounds clean.

Good Lord I love these. Are you shopping this around? I think you have a real shot of these getting picked up.

Thanks. To answer your questions, 1) It's the footboard of the bed. 2) The vignetting is actually just light falloff. I have to try and think of everything -- which is very hard when you're acting in the thing too, so something always suffers (usually it's the sound, or close-ups that don't match in frame size). It's been a real learning experience being in front of the camera. 3) The mic is the AT4073a and we're running it right into the camera (God, I love the HVX!).

Yes, we are shopping it around. I got a call from a producer friend today who downloaded the episodes from our podcast to his iPod and is taking them with him to Sundance. I have a half-hour pilot written and an outline for three more episodes. Keep those fingers crossed!

Brian, are you doing post ADR or mainly using the source audio from the 4073a? I'm glad Kholi brought up the sound, I've been thinking the same thing.

Thanks again for the kind words. I play Mr. Deity. I didn't want to play the role, but I couldn't get any of my actor friends to bite --- they either thought it was too controversial or didn't want to be typecast (one just couldn't make the time commitment). This is the first time I've acted in anything. So, i've been thrilled that people seem to like the performances. While we're shooting them, I always think I'm just totally screwing it up --- and this episode was particularly difficult because I have so much dialog. I won't be writing that much for myself again.

All the audio so far has been right from the 4073a. We did some ADR in an episode not yet posted, but only because there was so much wind. I really think that mic is the best mic you can get for the money. I have the oktava too, and it isn't even close to the quality of the AT.

The M2 always has a broad, minor light fall-off from the center outward. It's almost imperceptible, but is obvious when comparing identical footage that is shot with and without the M2. i, personally, think that's a cool aesthetic. Any obvious vignetting you see with the M2 is because it wasn't set up right (sometimes intentionally for that very effect).

As for the sharpness, I had the detail settings cranked to +7 this time. I usually keep them at around +3 to +4. I may keep them at +7 with the M2 as the HVX is great at not doing that awful "edge sharpening" -- even at +7. It really is an amazing camera.

These are hilarious. First mini-series I have ever bothered to watch every episode of. Was laughing out loud several times.

Don't sweat the acting job -- you are perfect for the role. Can't imagine it any other way.
