Viewing HVX Footage in Post - Monitor, CRT, LCD

Hey all.

I want to monitor my HVX footage in post on a plasma tv. I plan to buy the Decklink HD card, so I am looking for plasma suggestions. I found this Panasonic Business line model, and am wondering if anyone has experience with these?

I know about the Panasonic LCD Production Monitors, and I eventually plan to get one of them for critical color correction. Right now I am just looking for a decent sized plasma for viewing. Thanks in advance.

Just make sure your not planning on viewing 720/24p on the Plasma through the Decklink card. They don't support that format as it is the only format that is not considered a video format. All others are supported. I just hoked up a bitchin Panasonic projector to Cinema Desktop Preview as a second monitor and the results of watching my HVX 720/24p footage was nothing short of jaw-dropping, and that's considering that the Cinema Preview is supposed to be a lower rez- proxie (maybe 80% but just guessing)

Actually if you go Panasonic get the TH-42PHD8UK, which is its industrial version and is less expensive. The pro is that you get all the color/luma control of a pro monitor (it is actually a pro monitor). The reason it's cheaper is that it doesn't have speakers and a tv tuner (which you don't really need anyway if you have a cable or satellite top box)

Thanks for the comments. Well, the monitor I posted is the 8UK's replacement (i believe??), so the plasma I posted is part of the industrial line models.

I am concerned about not being able to view 720/24p video on them. I mainly shoot 720/24pn, so does this mean I wouldn't be able to view that on the plasma?

Thanks for the comments. Any suggestions on what I should do? What equipment to get to best view this footage? I am editing in FCP on a quad PowerPc Mac.

wow, I can't believe the price dropped that much. We paid $1800 for a 42" ED version of that panasic a year and a half ago. The HD version was about $2700.

BTW, Tiger Direct has it for $1050

but I guess that doesn't help if it won't play 720x24p. I would like to hear alternative suggestions also.

But this one does make a great TV for the living room if you have external speakers and cable box.

Yeah. It seems to have great reviews, and the price is incredible. I have external speakers, so this does look like a good choice for the living room.

I still don't know what to do about this issue. I have heard of people hooking up to a plasma through the decklink or kona card. Is this just a handicap with this tv or is this common?

Here's a question...

Here's a question...

Before upgrading my desktop, I have been wondering about what to buy taking my HVX into consideration. What do you recommend?

Assuming I upgrade to an intel Mac Pro, would a true 1080 roughly 30" screen allow me to view images at full resolution? What program would let me do this, or do you recommend? I do not expect to edit/colorize etc. at full resolution, but I do expect to be able to view all of my footage to inspect focus, framing and color at maximum capacity - digital dailies if you will - and take notes on clips accordingly.

What are people's experiences with this?

Thanks

Sukram, not trying to be rude, but that is a slighty different question that might
be better if you just started a new thread. Thanks

Okay, let me ask this another way, for those of you previewing 720/24pn footage out of your decklink/kona/etc. card, what plasma are you using (if you are using one?

I aplogize. I just noticed I completely got the wrong impression from earlier posts. This is a limitation of the decklink card, not the plasma....my fault for not reading correctly

Viewing HVX Footage in Post - Monitor, CRT, LCD

I'm having a bit of a tough time deciperhing the story on this. I've done quite a bit of searching here and on the web but have yet to get a clear sense of it.

For a 720/24p timeline in FCP what is the most affordable way to monitor the output for decent color correction? Would a Kona 2 and a component analog monitor work? I have both a Panasonic plasma 42" HD and a Sony HT75W 17" HD LCD. Would the Kona work directly, outputting a 720/24p timeline to either of those? I know it will output 720/60i but I plan to use 24p for my projects. I understand that something like the Panasonic 17" LCD broadcast monitor would be ideal, but I don't have the budget for that.

Are there other output solutions that would work with my component monitors? Matrox MXO? Again, 720/24p is going to be the format.

Any information would be most appreciated.

gateway has the 22" hd lcd out now, its 399 at circuit city, thats what i'm using for computer display and video monitor.

Mangler how do you feel about that 22"? I picked it up at Best Buy the other day, used it for a couple days and returned it. The backlight bleed was killer, and my Dell 17" 4:3 LCD looked so much better. I was pretty disappointed. I've heard the Gateway 21" has a better screen, but I can't find it in stores.

I'd rather find something cheaper than one of the 24 inchers out there, but the quality just didn't do it for me and I think I'm going to end up going for one of them. Maybe I got a particularly bad screen. From a size standpoint the 22" sure did hit the sweet spot that's for sure.

I got a Toshiba 32HLC56 LCD monitor. (32") This is the monitor equivilant of an HDTV that was recently top rated by Consumer Reports. It is running around
$600 on sale. I used a DVI cable out of my Imac with an HDMI adapter. SD does not look great, but HD looks incredible. I had to change a setting in the menu before it looked good (not sure what it was). Also takes component so you can plug the cam straight in if you need to.
