Im shooting a documentary, so I can't release any of the footage. If I shoot something generic, then I'll do my best to post it. If I was you, I would go to a retailer and check the camera out. That's what I did.

I could probably put a few shots up. But I couldn't leave it up for too long (don't have the bandwith) and I need to get permission from my talent. give me a day or two.

but i would have to compress it to put it online so transmission is right, you'd probably be better off going to a pro Sony dealer.

Kinda weird. When the A1 came out there were tons of footage posted, but so far almost nothing for the V1U.

Some V1U (and V1E) footage has been posted at DVInfo.net.

But I agree, there's an overall dearth of V1U footage! I expected to see a lot more by now.

compressed or not just post the footage please if you have the camera show us somthing act like it was dvx footage i post somthing damn

sheesh! OK! :)

I just cut something together for you guys. I'll post a link here later today. I may have to pull it tomorrow if we exceed my site's bandwith, but I promise to keep it up for at least a day.

Thanks Magi.

What's your impression of the camera? Does it meet your expectations?

A lot of us are weighing a V1U purchase against the Canon A1...and there's much more info available on the A1.

here it is. 2 min. 15 sec. It is only 1/2 the resolution (960X540) so you can't quite see the level of detail the cam shoots, but I put a lot of stuff in there to show everything else off. Of course, it is compressed for the web, but not too heavily. footage has no FX or color correction of any kind.

Sean,
My general impression of the cam is quite good. I chose it because I have shot a lot of stuff with the DVX100 & with the Sony HVR-A1U. The V1U's form factor is very similar to the DVX100 and it uses the same type of pulldown for 24p. The menu interface is extremely similar to the A1U (also a Sony HDV camera.)

Things I really love about it:

At 1920X1080 progressive, the MPEG2 compression almost has a tiny film grain effect. My interlaced A1U it came off as amatuer, but because on the V1 it is progressive, the compression is somehow cleaner, if that makes sense, and it is nice. Also, it has really solid low light performance. I had heard a review to the contrary for the FX7, but the V1U surprised me. The manual iris & focus are responsive. There is a "push auto focus" button that activates auto focus only for as long as you're holding the button. That saved me a lot of time. I detected no resolution drop in the progressive modes. I LOVE the cinematone gamma and cinematone color stuff. the Picture Profile presets are excellent (PP2 is the cinema preset that I shot the above movie with).

The only negative comment I have isn't a real concern for me. At 60i & 30p, I haven't blown out the bit rate. As another poster said, however, there is something to be said for using the full bit rate, because I did blow it out a couple of times at 24p. These were super extreme things that I don't think you'd encounter in a real shooting environment. (I was trying to blow out the bit rate by crazy light, lots of multiple motion subjects and shaking the camera handheld). Basically, for one frame I could see the compression after I captured it and paused on one frame. (Kind of like OTA HD except this was only 1% of that...)

To me it was minor and just a limitation of the camera.

I work at a post house and most of our footage comes from the DVCPRO HD 720p 24 Varicam (I think that cam is in the $50,000 range?). I've also directed a couple of shorts using the F900 (I think that is still over $100,000.) So I have a good idea of what you get for the money.

After playing with the camera for less than an hour, I was getting the most filmlike images I've ever seen for a sub $10,000 camera because of:

1. all those pixels (effective 1920X1080)
2. slight grain type effect from the HDV codec used on progressive images
3. cinematone gamma & cinematone color (especially using Picture Profile 2 preset)
4. True 24p

Yes, it uses HDV. Yes, that means long GOP compression and limited color space and the equivalent of mp3 audio (audio sounded pretty good, by the way.) But I am very happy with this cam, and I don't know if those complaints would be much different from the Canon because it also uses HDV.

In short (oops, too late):

If you want to emulate the look of film for less than $5,000, I highly recommend the V1U.

And no, I don't work for Sony.

:)

well I trust your judgement
a friend of mine in LA said it was a great cam as well ,so I might just pick up one this year for that price you can't beat it. $4,200

Wow. LOL. That looked pretty good, man. You're right, it does look rather cinematic. Also, the color rendition is very nice. It's not over-saturated or under-saturated at all. Thanks for sharing that. It's about time someone posted some nice footage from this camera.

Magi, thanks for your post. Your footage looks great! It's among the first anyone's posted that looks like the type of stuff I might actually shoot (ie. roaming out and about in the real world) -- as opposed, say, to still shots of trees and cats. :)

Thanks also for your observations about the camera. I've been interested in the V1U over its competitors due to its relatively small size and weight. It seems it would be a bit more mobile than an HVX or Canon A1.

It appears that in the hands of a skilled operator, ANY of these cameras is capable of producing stellar images. The question is which one best suits your particular needs.

Seems like more and more people are subscribing to this. Makes it better for all of us in the end.

Few people care about this camera. It was timed poorly. If it had come out pre-Canon A1 it would be hot. It came out post Canon A1. Sony isn't trust-worthy with 24p and prosumer cams, Canon is. They may have a great system now but too little to late. They should've done it on the FX and it's big brother which would still make it viable against the Canon.

Sony's learning the hard lesson that as great as this camera is people will choose to not care about you if you keep raking them the wrong way (PS3 anyone). The PS3 is a great example. Sure it sold big at the start, but now game store have a bunch of them that won't move and out of everything the Nintendo is the one kicking the most butt. Sony should start doing things right and they will be back on top. Sony should've bought this system out when Xbox came out, now the system is pretty played. Same thing with this camera. We should've 24p on the first Sony HDV camera so no matter how great, it's already been done and for cheaper. Sony could've played it smart and bought out the camera at the same price point but they didn't even want to do that. I was fiending for a Sony HDV/24p camera but right now the A1 is where I'm looking. Sorry Sony, better luck tomorrow.

I disagree. The only way that a camera can be considered "too little, too late" is if it is behind the time in comparison with its competitors. So far I see nothing about the V1U that is behind the Canon. HDV 24p? Check. 20x zoom? Check. Capable of producing filmlike image? Check. It even has HDMI output which the Canon lacks. You're talking as if people are so turned off by Sony's past efforts at putting out a 24p prosumer camera that they will automatically consider the V1U worthless. If I recall the XL2, Canon's previous 24p camera, sold very poorly. There are till tons of post here and on DVinfo asking if 24F is really as good as 24p, so people can't be "trusting" Canon more than Sony.

The A1 and the V1U are newcomers to the game and it really doesn't make sense for the A1 to be the automatic winner. I think the lack of footage from the V1U is partly because people are still struggling with the work flow of 1080/24p and because the V1U is released later than the Canon.

i agree with jade on this , know i seen alot A1 footage at its real nice put the V1 has more to offer true 24p hdmi and lets not forget that little mini harddrive that hold 4.5hours of footage that you can connect to your computer like an external hard drive and edit you footage , its also nice to be vegas user to which I am have 6 i gt a V1U ill get 7 , but send us some more your footage magi that beautiful V1U footage go magi , go magi
