Monitoring FCP via HVX

Hi All

Apologies if this is covered elsewhere but I couldn't find it.

I am trying to use my HVX between the computer and video monitor as a decoder. FCP can recognise that the camera is there but the HVX won't go into PC mode which i assume is because I don't have a P2 card inserted - i am a FS 100 user.

Any body got any clues on this?

Thanks,

Dom

If you want to use the HVX as a firewire decoder, don't go into PC mode, go into VCR/MCR mode and turn the thumbnails off.

Be aware that the HVX can't pass an HD signal from firewire out to the component outputs.

Hi Barry,

I don't mean to steal the thread but is it possible to capture HD from HVX using firewire with FCP?

Thanks!

yes, you can. There are a lot of threads on this so just do a search.

DV Rack blows any NLE capture tool into the weeds. Embarrasses them all. DV Rack 2.0 HD is far better at monitoring and capturing footage than FCP or any NLE is or likely ever will be. It's a dedicated, special-purpose monitoring and capture tool. For NLEs, capture is rarely much more than an added component, but for DV Rack, it's what it lives and breathes to do. Take one look at how it works and you'll never want to "log & capture" again.

Thank you everyone! I finally figured out how to capture using FCP directly from HVX. I have a question though. How can I play back correctly footage shoot with 720p/24 at 60 frames or 12 frames? I mean when I set the camera to the framerates I want and capture using FCP, what setting for the sequence to get the right playback? Thanks in advance!

In FCP, you need the Panasonic Frame Rate converter to edit variable frame rate. The most recent version is on your FCP 5.1 distribution disk in the Extras folder. Drop it into the Plug-Ins folder of FCP. It appears in the Tools menu in FCP.

Thanks, Ned! I will try that.

Also, I believe I have the version 5.1 and I keep hearing people recommending to upgrade to 5.1.2 for FCP. Is there a major feature added in the new update? Please advise. Thanks!

Yes... 5.1.2 is the current version of FCP and adds a number of important new features, not the least of which is a whole new P2 import enhancement.

Hi Ned,

I tried the Panasonic Frame Rate converter and it worked. However, I still need to render the clip for playback if I didn't choose to make self-contained movie. Is this the only way to go? Please advise. Thanks!
