HD live capture w/o p2 card in Edius Broadcast 4?

Is it possible to capture HD from the hvx to Edius Broadcast 4 without a p2 card? I start a project and select a HD DVCPro setting, put the hvx to EXT for 1394 then go to the Capture tab where 'Capture' is greyed out.

Also, i imported a 1080 clip and pressed play and after only a couple frames it stops and comes up with a 'playback stopped' box.

I'm brand spankin new to this program so maybe doing something fundaMENTALly wrong.

btw i'm running a p4 3GB, 1.5gb ram, 120 5400hd (will be editing on ext esata {did i just answer my own 'playback stopped' question there?}).

I've never tried live capture using Edius, sorry, can't help you there.

Regarding the Playback Stopped problem, try Settings -> Application Settings -> Playback -> Stop Playback at frame drop (uncheck this).

Yes EDIUS Broadcast can capture live 1080 and 720 from an HVX through firewire. And yes, as THoff says (man, that guy is everywhere!) you'd need to uncheck that box. But be aware that you may be getting dropped frames. You need a fairly quick hard disk; an external e-sata drive should be fast enough.

Thanks guys will try the fix to the playback problem tomorrow.

Barry, in regards to live capture can you please elaborate on how to do this without a p2 card as I can't access 1080 or 720 in the HVX setup.

Actually that didn't work either (i thought it would). I'll play around with it in the next couple days when i have some time, probably just something simple i've missed.

I'll actually give it a whirl when I get home, and I'll write up step-by-step instructions if you haven't solved this by then.

You are having problems with the actual capture process, or you are having problems accessing 720 or 1080 modes without a p2 card in the camera? Or both?

For choosing 720 or 1080 mode in camera, you just have to do as Barry said. And go to the menu. Choose option 5, and the first option in that sub-menu is the recording mode.

Regarding "Playback stopped" that is probably because (right now) you are trying to edit on a 5400 rpm drive. Faster drive (eSATA will be good. That is what I run in a RAID 0) will probably solve that problem.

Regarding how to capture with EDIUS, this is what I did:
Open EDIUS. Go to the capture menu and choose input settings.

Input device is Generic OHCI Input.
Input Format is (whatever you are trying to capture. Make sure it matches your camera. PN mode will not work.

Try DVCPRO HD 1080/59.94i

(Towards the bottom, above the "ok" button, you will see "CODEC" with a tab next to it. Choose "ALL" So you can see everything)

Click ok

Then click the red button under the preview window. The one with the picture of the tape. If your camera is set to 1080i/24p or some 1080 setting to record. It should work.

Note:
As, I believe it was Dregenthal some weeks back who was having this problem...

Capture of 1080 worked fine.
If you try to capture 720, no dice. Possibly a bug after all. 720 acts like it's 4k or something and just chokes out on it.

Alright, I just tried it for myself, and the only change I had to make to the default Edius settings (using Capture -> Input Settings) was to change the capture codec from "Canopus DV" to "DVCProHD".

Since the project was set up for DVCProHD @ 1080i/30P, it would have been nice for Edius to default to an appropriate capture codec, but it only took me about ten seconds to figure out what was wrong and to correct it.

Yep. I just choose "all" under codec, and that lets you look at all of them, and choose the appropriate one.

I also stumbled upon the fact that you can set up (it looks like) 3 different capture settings, or hot buttons if you will. So, if you wanted to switch from 24 to 30 fps, for example you can just click one button to change to that capture preset, rather than having to go in and manually change your settings everytime.

Thoff, when you get some time, would you mind testing out 720p capture. I remember Dregenthal was reporting that he couldn't capture 720, but he could 1080. Being that this was the first time I tried live capture, I thought I would give them both a try. Same issue with me. Could be a bug. I'll go dig that thread up. I don't wanna get this one off topic, which is tmnt's.

I just tried it briefly, and no dice capturing 720 in any shape or form with Edius V4.10.

I'm not sure what the problem is yet, I only played with it for a few minutes, but it is nothing obvious (at least not to me). This and the previous post about capturing 1080 without P2 media are the very first time I tried to capture using FW -- up until now I've only used P2 cards and DV Rack 2.0 HD.

The Canopus Germany technical support knows about this problem since August 2006. No improvement with version 4.1.

Barry - unfortunately in PAL countries we had to wait until v4 to have the 720p/50p/25p support.

Dregenthal told me that he forgot about the 720 issue because he bought the upgrade to DV Rack HD, and he is extremely satisfied with it.

I'm somewhat frustrated that my Canopus dealer - who by the way doesn't know Broadcast very well - seems to be able to record 720/50p without any problems. I'll have to see it with my own eyes.

Ok, was an easy fix.

Under the capture tab, i just had to select OCHI Input (something like that anyway) and all was good.

Yeah the 720p bug is pathetic. It should have been squashed months ago.
