P2 8Gig slashed price in Europe starting 2007

Sweet!

I remember when you were evaluating it and am glad to hear it works like a charm.

What is your preferred editing package?

A mixed bag right now. I prefer how Vegas works, but it's not as good with the HVX as EDIUS is. I think EDIUS is near perfect P2 integration, but it's not as good an editor as Vegas is.

So, I end up using them both. But I'm trending more towards Vegas recently now that Raylight has added a timeline MXF plug-in. But it has to go through a round of improvement, at least offering on-the-fly pulldown removal, before I'd be tempted to move back to it full-time. EDIUS is just super-fast with the footage, amazingly fast. Vegas w/RayLight can't compare with what EDIUS does with the footage. But EDIUS isn't as good as Vegas, so... I use both.

Nice!!!

That's the same reason surgeons use more than one tool.

Each has it's place.

Thanks for sharing your insight Barry! ;-)

>P2 in USD is about 725 TODAY,

The BEST UK price I can get is £825 which is what $1550 at todays exchange rate?

Indy... who is mighty peed off! :(

Proactive in UK £810.75 inc VAT - a little better. Money is money !

France, Germany & Norway are confirming the drop.
Perhaps wait a little to have this effective in UK, too!

Another issue will be inventory losses. Remember last year when the oil companies has high profits due to current 'in the ground' inventory of a commodity that was appreciating? What you may not have heard was that the opposite effect has come along and they are not so profitable right now. In fact they are loosing money on the opposite side of the same phenomenon.

So what happens if you are B&H Photo and you are sitting on a dozen 8GB P2 cards that you acquired for $900 each, and Panny comes along and slashes the price to $750? Are you going to take the loss up front in the hopes that you will make it up by selling more product after you burn through your current inventory, or are you going to leave the price at $1150 until someone else forces you to drop your price?

I have one 8GB card so I can learn how to set up my workflow, but I will need two more. I'm in no rush, but those of you who are waiting for the big price drop, it may still be a while out (unless Panny rebates the distributors / resellers).

Resellers will get back margin discount. An usual distribution practice with the effect of transferring a loss of margin by discounting more their purchase to Panasonic.

[This mechanism to avoid selling lower than reseller price, which is forbidden by commercial law. ( // to no market dumping, no "voluntary" bankruptcy )]

When Panasonic US dropped the price from $2200 to $1400 they gave their resellers "price protection" (meaning, as I understand it, they rebated dealers the difference between the old dealer cost and the new dealer cost). They also gave the price protection to any customer who had bought in the last 30 days.

Yes, at the accounting level, you cannot go back in time, and what you described as "price protection" is the resulting effect.

This is what happened with Videoplus when the sales rep gave a new price lower than their actual reseller purchasing price.

So, there is no barriers, like purging the resellers stock by example, to widespread the drop.

If you can get it for 550 euros + vat that equates to what £430 inc. vat at todays exchange rate?

If they don't hurry I'm off to Paris to buy.... anyone ACTUALLY got the 550 euro price?

Indy.....

£ 369 as of today.

Yes! The guy at Videoplus is Amy, and it is real!
Check out their page for availability (in stock), if you need some help (like a phone call to them) just tell me!

When the 8Gig drop price "re-organizes" the french market, in some weeks, we should witness amazing 4Gig low price.

Will ask 2 dealers if people take this drop as a 4/8 swap opportunity.

It is completly crazy!

It does not change the fact that Panasonic France gave the drop signal too early.
Anyway, Germany and Denmark have confirmed the upcoming drop.

Germanboy,
Could you, please, have an update on that with Pana Germany?

Ulrik,
Could you, please, get an update from Pana Denmark and the dealers?

We DO need to know the consistency, or its contrary.

LATEST UPDATE:

I just called VIDEOPLUS, they said they did not understand why they received huge 8Gig P2 orders.
Even one or several resellers tried/managed to buy P2 8gig at dropped price (It is a shame).

So, now, they are aware of this post, and I meet them tomorrow.

For DVX users, I will try to negociate a special price for the upcoming P2 16Gig, if we managed, here, to reach an agreed quantity.
If it is okay, will open a list here for you to register.

The huge orders this post generated is, of course, a backlog for P2 8Gig @ 550€.

Will give you my feedback after my visit tomorrow.
