HVX200 directly to laptop?

Hi there,

I ordered my HVX200e (PAL countries) today!!!! AT LAST!. and should get it next week. NOT BUYING P2 CARDS SINCE THEY ARE VERY EXPENSIVE (and there is no funds for that right now, hie hie)

I wanted to know:

Can I record 720P (DVCPro HD codec) directly to a laptop (with a firewire stripe RAID external HDD connected)?

It'll take me a month or three to save up till I can afford the firestore, but I would love to get 4:2:2 colorspace recorded footage, cause I've got a project that requires some greenscreen work.

Thanks for your time!

yes you can, but ive yet to be able to take advantage of the variable frame rates, but i think some of the smarter guys on here know how :)

Yes you can but if you're doing green screen, I would suggest shooting in 1080. It will give you more resolution and a better key.

i´ve tried dvrack too, but the trial just allows dv not hd - is there a trial for the hd version i´ve missed?

thanks

yes, there is but I am not sure if it allows you to import the shots into your NLE, I'm trying to figure out whe it isn't working for me with Vegas, it might just be me, but I have allready recorded HD clips with the trial version from the site

on the website is just a version wich says, it cannot capture HD just dv - and this version even don´t recognises my camera in hd mode - just in dv-mode .... where have you found yours?

Isn't EDIUS better than DV Rack?

EDIUS is a better editor than DV Rack, certainly -- because DV Rack isn't an editor.

DV Rack is a way better capture & monitor tool than EDIUS or any NLE.

They're totally different products for different purposes; I use 'em both.

derrik and koala, DV Rack, No longer has an HD trial. they used to have an HD trial but soon after being acquired by adobe they have decided to only provide a SD version of the trial. One of the things the old HD version had problems with was recording 60fps. In my test of it it only recorder 30fps. and it would double the frames. ie: "f1, f1, f2, f2, f3, f3, f4, f4, etc...." so the slow mo was an issue. When I contacted them about it, they told me that the update would fix that, but I believe you have to purchase the program to get the update.

As for 1080 being better for keying, I haven't heard that and would love it some one could verify or deny this. (some people are reporting banding on the edges on 1080 because the chip's resolution is closer to 720p than 1080 so it up-rezes it. So my assumption is that 720p is better for keying than the other resolutions of the camera)
Thanks.

oh, and yes DV rack is a monitor and capturing software and Edius is an editing program (imho. edius is the fastest Real time software for editing HD files from the HVX200)

If I wanted to capture only, I'd get DV Rack, just make sure you have a fast enough laptop or desktop with a fast harddrive. Its just limiting as far as mobility. I'm working on making a bracket to attach a tablet to my camera to use as a focusing monitor. and capturing device. if it all works I'll be selling my FS-100.

dreamer,
Its probably not to hard to make a bracket that just works, but I was looking for something more professional that was sturdy, and light. so I designed a bracket and went to a shop to have it made. If it works well and if there is any interest, I might sell them. the more you make the lower the price, but for prototyping its gets expensive. I also wanted it light, so I'm having it made from aluminum, some welding involved, some bending and some laser cutting. Unfortunately, I don't have a shop. :(

Hi siniarch,

I wish you good luck and hopefully you can come up with something really fast.

Let us know once you are ready.

I'd be concerned about vibration from using the laptop transmitting to the camera and ruining the shot. Let us know how that works out.

Good poing on the vibration thing, this could be a concern for zoomed in shots mainly...
I bet a rubber base would be enough dampening for the minor vibrations of the small hard drives and minute fan... after all they are spinning so if anything they'd make the tripod more stable... like gyroscopes do... anyone with fine or better than my understanding of this physical principle please comment
