thats the next part i have to tackle... still trying to get the right gear in place... then gonna have to get a more solid solution to hold the FF onto my rods...

J, how did you make your supports? From the same Ilsco parts and aluminum? How hard do you think putting my modification onto a solid aluminum block would be?

I used two 15mm ilsco connectors bridged by a piece of angle aluminum. In the center is a third smaller ilsco attached to hold a vertical shaft which supports the lens.

I will get pics up as soon as I can.

Puck,

Are there any 15mm rods at Ikea? I've looked and found a couple of 16mm, but nothing 15mm.

that would be sweet. i'd wanted to doa similar thing with limited access to saw and aluminum at the same time. i have to realign my world so that both happen at the same time...

How feasible do you think my setup would be in aluminum?

Aluminum is relatively easy to saw by hand if need be. I picked up a $39 drillpress from harbor freight, you really need one of those to drill into alumnum.

my sawing has always been less than precise, that's why i prefer to use the powertools... $39 for a drill press isn't bad tho.. just gotta convince the girlfriennd that yes it is a neccessary expense...

I just want Mark-2 of my design to function well. It's nice and clean and compact so for, but precision drilling to make everything flush is so important.

Good morning j,

I'm sitting here with the current Ilsco catalog but I can't find any componets specified out as 15mm. They all seem to be sized by wire gauges. Do you have the part number for the units you used?

Thanks,

Chuck

Puck: You just have to convince her that it would help in "remodeling the house" Thanks goodness my wife never asked just exactly how the drill press would help in remodeling the house... :)

Also one more thing to consider is that rods should be centered 85mm from the center of the lens. This is industry standard, and should be adhered to if you ever rent accessories.

I've notived that the lens on the DVX is a little off center of the body. does that affect your rods any? I find i have to place my lens support just a little bit off center as well and in a few other setups (Edwierdo's) this doesn't seem to be the case. ideas?

I drilled 2 sets of holes, one set centered and offset by a few centimeters in order to have the rails centered on the lens for the DVX.

Hello Puck,

Thanks for the part #

Unless something has changed, center line spacing standards for 15mm rods are either 60mm or 100mm. Spacing for 19mm rods is 105mm.

hey puck nice job did you make that ff also?
Thanks dude. I tried to make it functional AND pretty. We like shiny things...
The follow focus is actually a fishing reel that I've fitted on rather securely by now. Now that my experiment with the gears from the HP and the EPSON printers have failed (the teeth are way too shallow) i've going to make the next tstepand actually purchase a set of gears.. but now I know exactly what i'm looking for,so I'm not taking any lip from the hobby store guys...

Puck, a suggestion - when tightening you sled to the rails, give yourself a bit of a break and try to find some thumb screws or socket-head screws that you can tighten/loosen for easily for mobility. Having to pull out a screw driver might prove time consuming. Just a suggestion.
Besides that, I love the plastic pieces, they look pro!
