Michael Bay is awesome.

In twenty years, when I'm making films that are commercially successful, I can't wait for someone to say my movies suck (and to have a whole thread dedicated to it)... that day I will know I have made it big.

Well said, and agreed!

I dunno I liked The Island. It wasn't in least bit original in any aspect- :) , but it was very pretty and kept me entertained. Did it move cinema or sci-fi forward? No, but it didn't let me down either.

So the "real" Michael Bay is just about entertaining the people? Just because he doesn't make 16mm movies entirely in sepia with indie band soundtracks and average looking actors doesn't make him a sellout necessarily or even diminish his ability to create art. He's one of the goto guys for big action flicks is all.

If someone paid you 10 million to do something and you did it really well.. so well they asked you out for a second date so to speak would that make you less of a person? We're not talking about getting out the KY jelly here, he makes films -which he presumably enjoys. He makes big money for making big "popular" movies.. hmm. And these movies are entertaining to boot.

And let's face it, Citizen Kane is BORRRRING. Had there been more explosions however... now that's an idea for a groundbreaker.

wouldnt he be more like pollack a bunch of shi* thrown on to a canvas?

I think Koons designs art specifically to make money. That's the problem I have with the Bays of the world. Not that they are "popcorn" but that they have gone so far as to calculate everything about their movies for one end - opening weekend. There's no art left in them anywhere. They are a payday and nothing more. That's pretty crass, I think and ultimately really unsatisfying to watch.

So I vote for Koons. At Least Pollack had enough personality to be a drunk.

People who only like substance, story, character arcs, and intelligent movies... don't like blow 'em up movies.

People who only like sex, drugs, fights, explosions, and movies where they don't have to think too much... don't like slow dramatic movies.

Speak for yourself

I like any movie that is good; good can be the most amazing film I have ever seen and it can be a guilty pleasure. Slow, fast, dramatic, thriller, romance ..

I just want to be entertained. If it's agood it's good.

To say one person likes this and not that is generalizing

Someone who loves David Lean, Kar Wai Wong, or Mike Nichols could turn around and say that Michael Bay, George Lucas, or James Cameron sucks and just as equally the people that love Michael Bay and others could say the same about the previously stated film makers.
Puhleeeeeeeeeeese don't lump Cameron in with Michael Bay...

John, I said "only" like. As I say later on I have a hard time finding a movie I don't like. I totally agree with you about being entertained... (personally I grew up and love James Cameron, I like Michael Bay, and THX-1138 is one of my favorite movies). I agree I could have worded my rant better, hope I didn't offend you or anybody.

But to me, saying a movie or film maker sucks is generalizing.

EDIT: I suppose earlier I could have just easily said that someone who loves James Cameron could say Michael Bay sucks and someone who loves Michael Bay could say James Cameron sucks... that is the point of my rant... it's easy to pass judgement and be right to some people and wrong to others... I do it, we all do it. That is my point. Maybe I generalized to make a point.

I rather have people say they prefer this then that then just make a statement that someone sucks but not tell us why.

Bottom line is that Michael Bay is doing what he enjoys... just because millions of moviegoers enjoy the same thing, does not mean that he sucks. As someone else has already stated, blowing sh*t up is a lot of fun. To me, Bay is refreshing and entertaining, and as Hudson said, you always know what you're gonna get. I mean come on people, does every movie have to be a pretentious arthouse flick to be any good? Sometimes you just need to kick back and smell the gunpowder.

Michael Bay has made some good movies, in my opinion.
Jerry Bruckheimer is the most successful producer around. He rules.
and George Lucas made films I grew up on.

whenever i come across Armageddon on TV I say to myself, "fukking michael bay. why don't you try to make a goddamn movie and not a hundred million dollars. god." and then i don't change the channel.

i never watched a bay movie all the way through till i saw the isalnd. i still think he might have found a niche with scifi big pop corn films.

Michael Bay (and Jerry Bruckheimer) is in the business of making movies. The business of making movies is about making movies that sell. "Art" movies generally don't sell.

Being upset about that is about the same as being upset that bricks don't float. It's just the way it is, an immutable law of the universe. Accept it and adjust your attitudes accordingly, and you'll be a much happier person.

I generally cannot stand "Art" movies... and for us who want to be in the business of making movies, we have to balance our "artistic" side with our "what works" side... you gotta have a pulse on humanity.

like i said, i don't change the channel. but i don't know about floating bricks. i think a more accurate analogy would be McDonald's. I wish they made better food that was better for you. But they are not in the business of making great food. They're in the business of making money. Same thing with Michael Bay. But I'll still enjoy a Big Mac. and Armageddon.
