Michael Bay is awesome.

Spielberg....One of the greats....although I must say his attempts at present day films is a hit or miss situation....Minority Report....miss....E.T. at its time atleast....hit.

Cameron....Kicks ass.

Tarantino....Truly has a style of his own in shot selection, character development and story telling. A genius.

Scorsese....Hasn't made a great film since Casino....many will argue for Gangs of ny and the aviator but....they just don't have that "something special" that makes a truly memorable film. Taxi Driver is still his best film to date if not Raging Bull. Coppola outdoes him in the mafia genre with The Godfather though.

De Palma....huh? Last film to be released in the U.S. was Mission to Mars....blew ass. Snake Eyes before that....ugh. Mission Impossible before that....nothing great, fun though. Carlito's Way, Casualties of War and Scarface are his greats, none of which have been made after 1993 (Carlito's Way). He's loosing his touch as is Scorsese. Coppola outdoes him in the war genre with Apocalypse Now.

Shyamalan....Sixth Sense....great movie....the rest....so predictable....this guy needs to show some versatility fast. He's so early into his career and continues to do the same thing over and over.

Scott....last good film was Black Hawk Down....Good film, not a great. Gladiator, awesome! Blade Runner....A sci-fi classic! Alien....great film, Cameron outdid him with Aliens though.

Stone's just awesome.

Peter Jackson has definitely shown his talent with LOTR but he still has alot to prove.

Ailen is so much scarrier that Ailens. Shure Cameron gets the cool factor but ridley made us scream. That's so much more impressive to me.

Dr Strange love is my favorite comedy of all time. "You can't fight in here this is the war room!"
Kubric's films are so great for two reasons:
Kubric's obsessive research and nerotic attention to detail.
Kubric's fiercely independant and unique vision.

His films we extrodinarily well informed and a wholy owned voice that like it or not never relented from the well defined blueprint in his mind.
Every frame was borne into existance by his sheer force of will and intellect.
I envy the capacity and Hutsbah to be so confident in my vision.

The first time I watched Barry Lindon I hated it. The second time I watched it I tolerated it. The third time I was entranced! When I started to understand the arc of Barry's charachter I lost it! To be able to so completely encapsulate a man talented enough to gain a fortune but not enough to keep it. Wow!

John...
Even if you don't like this movie try and watch it for the photography. It was shot completely with available light. Candels are the only indoor lighting. They used a Zeiss 50mm F0.7! Designed for NASA and permanently attached to special Mitchell rear projection Rack over cameras. It's inspiring.

Life is tough...We can go on and on about the wonder of Kubrick's work, but if Jhon doesn't like it now after watching, he never will. I guess it all comes down to personal taste (or lack of) If you need to see a film with good lighting technique, I recomend Kubrick's "The Killing" There are some truly magical lighting setups here! Kubrick Is GOD!

PS....John, If Kubrick had done a Zombie film, You'd be all over him. LOL

Kubrick for me is all over the map. 'A Clockwork Orange' is one of my favorite films, whilst 'Barry Lyndon' is one of my least favorite.

But that's just me.

I'll have to agree. Circle gets the Square!!

Shaymalamadingdong or whatever the hell that guy's name is....I think he sucks. New thread. M. Night Shyamalan Sucks!!

~reservoir~

I'll keep that in mind regarding Kubrick; that's an interesting note on the 'available light' and Mino?

Your Jedi mind tricks won't work on me, boy.

replying to the original topic, yes, I agree that Micheal Bay sucks. I haven't seen any movie of his that I consider good. Reminds me of the Rambo sequels or Con Air. I'd rather my action movies in genre-influenced flicks like Kill Bill or the recent Sin City. People brought of Rodriguez somewhere and all I can say is I liked El Mariachi alot and Sin City alot, everyone of his films between those 2 I really did not.
George Lucas, again not really as a director by just doing what he did with both Star Wars and digital and how both of them changed the industry. Directing I give him credit for American Graphetti, that movie is great.
James Cameron I can take or leave. He gets credit for me by having learned under Roger Corman.
Bruckheimer I only know is a bigshot producer guy but not much else. He's rich and in Hollywood, that's all I really know.

I will say I can appreciate lots of directors, from Hitchock to Miike, Bava to Lynch, and lots of styles/genres/eras of good films from Shaghetti westerns to film noir to DV horror.

One of my favorite movies of all time was "Armageddon"!!! It was just so much freakin' fun! I like the rock a lot too. Plus, Michael Bay used to direct Victoria's Secret shows...how can you not like that? Peace.

I don't care how much talent he has or does not have, there is no excuse for being a screaming punk ass. I can't stand directors like Bay. He started in commercials and I'm pretty sure that he tried to be like Joe Pytka who is known for being a major asshole. I know guys who won't work for Michael Bay any more because he is just such a prick.

Anyone that equates good acting solely to great direction is really delusional..

a diretor that is terrible at working with actors can still make a film with great acting... acting lies a lot more within the individual portraying that character.

Direct an actor all you want, if they can't perform, or can't get into a character.. doesn't matter how good a director you are.

Cameron, makes great films, though he comes across as an egotistical asshole.

Michael bay makes fun pop corn movies, though I don't overly enjoy most of his work.

Jerry Brucheimer... hmm.. he is in the gray market for me...as a producer.. I'd say he is gifted.. look at the string of hits he has been involved with.. That too me says he is good at his job. And when it all comes down to it, making money is the name of game in theatrical film.

Lucas... I think he has a lot of talent as a director.. but.. I think he needs experienced actors to work with. I don't think he is good at working with fresh talent. If you look at the new SW trilogy... you can tell quite easily... Ewan Mcgregor, Liam Nesson... two examples.. even with **** dialog they still rise above the others in the films..

same goes for Ian McDiarmid..

but also, Lucas is a much better visual filmmaker, so I'd say he is a good editor. There isn;t anything wrong with being a good visual filmmaker.. it's part of the medium.

as for these guys 'sucking'.

Somehow I doubt you've ever met them in real life...and if you have I doubt you've ever had a conversation with them.. meaning you have a baseless opinion there.

unless you just refer to their work. Which would astound me since there is some real quality work amongst those names.

Let's be logical

Let's be logical

I'll be the first to say that Michael Bay is one of the worst wannabe filmmakers of all time. His pictures are awful ripoffs with no heart, no brains, no guts, no substance. It's just a bunch of crap that blows up to get the attention of a few morons.:furious3: you Michael Bay! He ruined the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, a classic by Tobe Hooper that was fine the way it was. Michael Bay disgraced it. He clearly doesn't know anything about a good scifi thriller because The Island was so poorly structured.:thumbdown I also remember the horrible Bad Boys franchise that was only enjoyed by the black movie goer.

George Lucas, well all I think the best thing he ever did was his student film THX 1138. The Empire Strikes Back was also great, but Lucas didn't direct it. He only wrote it, but I will give him credit for that, because it was so well paced. The other five were merely kids movies.

James Cameron, I used to like, He did great scifi pictures, then he sold out and did a love story that appeals only to women. :Drogar-Mad(DBG):

And Jerry Bruckheimer, well he's just a producer. He's only going to invest in what he thinks will make money and that's what he's done.

Uh, I enjoyed most (not all) of Michael Bay's film and I'm pretty sure I'm not a moron. Take his films at face value as escapist entertainment and you'll have a good time. Why read too much into it?

I liked the original Bad Boys and at least part of Bad Boys 2 and I'm asian. Please don't make blanket (and vaguely racist) statements like these.

also Lucas basically shaped filmmaking as you see and use it today, so I would show some respect.

The only reason why people think commerical directors suck is because we ourselves suck. They're commercial cuz they give people what they want: Guns, Girls, and a whole lot of glitz. They're successful cuz 80% of people in society like what they do and are willing to pay $7 to watch alot of fireworks.

We are what we see on the TV (:

scarecrow, how did you manage to dig up this thread from 1.5 years ago!

Anyone who's making money doing what they love don't suck, we do :(.

I didnt take the time to read all of the posts, but how in the world can you say George Lucas sucks? Star Wars IV for example had a budgete of just $11 Million. According to wikipedia, "As of 2005, A New Hope grossed $461M in the United States and a total of $775.4 million in worldwide boxoffice sales."

Thats quite a profit.

I knew it was going to suck, though, when in the trailer the Zeroes fly over a little league baseball game . . . at 7:30 on a Sunday morning in 1941.

I knew it was going to suck when he used Knox class Figs and Spruance DDs in the background.

I like Bay

I know what I get and what to expect when I see a Bay film. Sometimes I'm in the mood for sugary lip gloss.

Filmmakers like Bay and Lucas remind me of what is important in cinema. Like the difference between Elvis and The Beatles; one is packaged and processed for white bread America and the other is actually saying something.

They both have a place.
