Redrock Follow Focus can be fixed

I though this might be interesting for some people getting Nikkor lenses until the Red Zoom ships.

We got a cheap Redrock Follow Focus some months ago for our Nikkor lenses on a P&S Mini35 which we use to train for the RED ONE. But the fact that it has a backlash/play of 2° was killing us - it makes it hardly usable. So we got a $2k Arri follow focus which happens to work perfectly with the Redrock lens gears.

Instead of throwing away the Redrock FF I though I'd give it a try and fix that play. The item causing the problem is a Huco L-Box Gearbox with acetal gears which costs about $30. It is noticeable that the play is reduced if you push both axles into the box. So we milled the box open and inserted a very thin shim which will keep the gears in an optimal position.

And voila! The reassembled follow focus now has zero play and works as well as the Arri FF from a mechanical point of view. The usage of the Arri one is still nicer but as the Redrock one only costs 1/4 of the price it is definitely a bargain.

If anybody in the RED community is interested I can paste photos of how the procedure works or for those who do not have a milling cutter in their garage we could generate a bunch of fixed gearboxes and mail them (preferably in Europe) at cost price. The exchange of the box can be performed easily with an Allen key.

I read on the redrock forums that they are working on a fix for this. It will be available for existing users and in the upcoming version of the FF.

I have a follow focus from JBK Cinequipt. It has the same problem as the Redrock FF. And surprise, surprise... they used the same gear box as the Redrock. Any info you have on how you accomplished the fix would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I'm curious to know if anyone has tried the version of the Huco gearbox that uses metal gears rather than plastic gears? It would be interesting to know if it has less backlash.

Real world feedback about off price accessories is invaluable. Ways to retrofit the pieces that fall short is a huge help for others in the same boat. I hope that Red Rock is paying attention and follows through by fixing their FF. As a community we must nurture companies that offer us alternatives to the overpriced offerings of companies like Arri (love their stuff BTW) that are marketing primarily to rental houses anyway, not shooters.

As promised, some pictures of how to fix the Redrock Follow Focus. It should make the procedure quite clear. If you still have questions please feel free to ask.

Things that are critical:
  • Maybe order a new gear box from a Huco dealer and work with that one - not to break your original one. The one with the acetal gears is about $30, the one with the metal gears is about $65. Both have the 2mm play.
  • Beware when you mill the box open. 0,5mm too deep and the gears are ruined.
  • The shim that gets inserted to keep the one gear pushed nearer to the other one (last picture) has to be quite thin.

It's good to hear that Redrock finally admits that their device is not really usable in a professional manner and they are willing to work on a fix. They have stated that the play is "normal" for a long time.

So I would wait till the RED ships until you try to fix the gearbox yourself. If Redrock has a fix available till then you can save yourself the trouble.

Yeah. I have one of those. Trouble is, there's also a less than taut drivebelt which also has play of the same order, and no easy way of belt adjustment. Hmmmm. :crybaby:
