FS-100 Firmware Upgrade?

Does anyone know when the version 3.0 firmware upgrade for the FS-100 will be available? The September press release mentioned mid 4th quarter, but it's not unusual to have development delays. Also is the price still $39? Matt, can you give us an update?

I know (and don't ask me how I know) that the upgrade is still in testing but getting close.

I'm curious; what problems are people still experiencing with their FS100's? Not thread-jacking here, b/c I think this relates to your thread subject. I know the FS100's have historically been "buggy," but I don't know as of recent how many of those bugs have been worked out. Focus has told us nothing, so I figure what better place to go to answer this than here.

Any and all info welcome.

Not certain what you mean as "historically buggy."

I do know that the company has provided regularly firmware upgrades to address issues that have arisen.

I echo David's comment-- I have not found the FS-100 buggy at all. There was one issue right at release with some frame-skipping, which was addressed very quickly with a firmware update. Since that, there have been several firmware updates which have added features. The 3.0 version will take the product in a totally new direction and I think that Focus remains deeply committed to product development.

For me, I'm looking forward to the version 3.0 firmware because it will allow more record time, and it can record directly to Quicktime. I did notice some recent threads concerning problems with importing into FCP 5.1.2 (see below), but some people are attributing the problems to Apple. Have these issues been resolved? I guess if you can record directly to QT format, then you can skip the P2 import process altogether. But it would be nice to find the source of the problems and correct it.

Hello,

We are hoping to have FS-100 version 3.0 available by the end of the year. It is in beta and very close to being finalized. I will post more to this forum when I have a firm date.

Matt

I'll be buying my HVX next week. I was hoping the new Firestores would have been available by now, but better to not rush something like this.

I'll just have to use tape and the free 8GB card until then.

Well, it's going to take 6 to 8 weeks to get your free P2 card so with just tape you won't be shooting any HD. There is no "new Firestore." It is just a firmware upgrade to enable 24p native shooting as well as QuickTime or MXF options.

Ned

If the firestore does quicktime files, but you are using a Windows based computer to edit, will that eliminate the "glitch" drop out that mac users get?

I haven't seen any "glitch dropout" in Mac since the first rev of the FS-100. There are other issues currently with Mac import such as the spanning issues in FCP 5.1.2, but I don't believe the drop out is a problem any more. Please do correct me if I'm wrong and others are seeing it; it just happens that I am not.

I know it's not a new Firestore, but I'd rather buy it with the 3.0 already installed.

....if it's anything like the other upgrades, it's essentially a drag and drop restart kinda process...... pretty simple.....and Matt, great and awesome news.... end of the year is perty dang close!

You mount the FS-100 on your computer.

Then copy the small downloaded file to the FS-100.

And then essentially go to the screen and select update.

Couldn't be easier.

But you do have to reboot, IINM. Sometimes people don't do that and then complain of issues; don't the official FS-100 instructions say that you *must* do a hard reboot?

Also, past upgrades were free, and this one isn't. I know $39 is not much, but I can understand being pi**ed if you just spent a lot of money and 2 weeks later you have to pay for a firmware upgrade.

Weren't past updates to address bugs and performance issues? The new firmware adds new features, so it makes sense to me that this would be an optional thing that you pay for if you want it. There is nothing that keeps people who are on earlier versions of the firmware from sticking with it.

Getting automatic pulldown removal and the larger recording capacity / simplified workflow should easily be worth $40. Financially, it's a no-brainer.

I don't have any dropout glitch, but I do have a small audio pops on some clips joined together that I shot at 24p. I'm assuming this will be fixed in later updates. I currently run the latest and still got them.

V.3.0 adds features, signficant features.

If it were a couple of hundred dollars, I'd complain.

But this firmware update increases the capacity of the FS-100 for $39.00.

We spend as much for half a dinner out.
