Green screen & direct to disk recording.

As we all know miniDV is a bad format for doing green screen because of the stair stepping and artifacts that occur from the compression. Would recording directly into a computer through firewire eliminate the compression issues and allow for a clean key?

Thanks in advance for any help!!

No - it's basically the same thing just different media - the only benefit I can think of is the workflow being quicker.
The other thing is obviously taking the signal and using it in a realtime hardware based keyer - which would probably give you better results or at least make the composition easier since you can do this in realtime and the cost of SD equipment to buy or rent will be significantly lower.

Unless there is a way to bring in the data before it gets compressed - which seems unlikely - you would just as well record on a good dv tape and key in your weapon of choice - shake / adobe / fcp etc.....

...of course there may be an alternative I don't know about - anyone else have a different angle on this?

Yup,
The DV signal transfered through firewire is the exact same DV signal that is recorded to tape.

The only way to do this and benefit would be to use an analog capture card and capture in a less compressed form from the Composite or S-video output from the DVX.

hi,
till now i've understud that the analog signal from the DVX was DV compressed...
if it is not which kind of signal is it?
Capturing it with a lossless codec is a solution to the DV artifacts and there is an increase in quality? Any sample or comparison?

I think your DVX would need to be upgraded with Andromeda in order to capture to the computer before compression.

So...no way out for me... Andromeda, by now, is only for NTSC ... and with the needed laptop is around 4000$ + 1000$ for my old DVX = 1 new HVX or JVCHD
mmmh???

Has someone compared footage coming off thru component from HVX or JVCHD and digitally captured with the Andromeda output?
