Hey, i need to edit a project that involves mixing DVCPRO HD 24p (HVX) with DVCPRO HD 59.98 (super16mm). Most of the footage was shot with the HVX. do you think the best thing to do would be to drop the super16mm footage into the 24p timeline and then render it out? or could i do this with the frame conversion? any help or tips would be great, this is my first HD project, so its been a big learning project.

Which NLE are you using? Some let you freely mix different framerates on the timeline, some don't.

FCP, i can drop it into the timeline, but it needs to render out first. i rather try to render a whole new clip to work from, so each time i make a change, i dont have to render it out.

i just tried using compressor to render out a DVCPRO HD 24p file. Altough this works, i'm afraid the compression is extremely high. For a 30 min clip, its only 10 gigs, that seems way to low, and not much higher then SD.

If the 24p was not shot 24pN on a P2 card but just shot 24p, bring into FCP by Import-> Panasonic P2 and do not remove the pulldown. Then you have 59.94 footage you can put on the same timeline. Alternatively, if this is 24 frame film footage which has been telecined, it should have the pulldown. Thus, you could always remove advanced pulldown in FCP to edit that on a 23.98 timeline in the event your P2 footage was 24pN.

10GB for a 30 minute 720p24 clip is normal. Remember the data rate for DVCPRO HD 720p24 is only 40Mb/s (versus 100Mb/s for 720p60). Figure it out this way:

40 Mb/s data rate x 30 min x 60 sec/min x 1/8 MB/Mb = 9000 MB = 9 GB

The relatively small file size is one reason why a lot of people shoot 24p.
