Hylen Lens System

Why? Everything you can do with that would surely be better done in post where you have absolute control on a clean digital negative?

Hi Graeme,

I think this is the first time I have disagreed with anything you have said! IMHO real focus changes look so much better than anything 'fixed' in post. Often cheaper too!

Best wishes,

Stephen

I agree with you there also Steven. But what is this Hylen system. From the images it just looks like a swing/shift setup.

more control in post

more control in post

real focus will probably always look a little better or more organic but the power of red is a 4k image that can be manipulated in so many more ways through software in post. production is too expensive to be manipulating specialized optics take after take. but if you capture a 4k image, you have enough resolution to work with even a few generations down. that kind of control will end up looking "better" and cost much less in the end.

I recently worked on a 35mm shoot where we used the Hylén. We did some tests and determined that we could effectively recreate the effect in post, which we did on any shots that required VFX.

The Hylén is different than a swing/tilt or a split focus filter in that it cannot bring things into focus. It can only add softness, and its boke effect is unique and unrelated to the DOF of the lens mounted to it.

Of course, the thing that made it possible to create the effect in post was the massive dynamic range of scanned 35mm color negative film.

Stu, with your experience on Hylen System, can it do dynamic texts/graphics overlay, that is, can you update or feed informations to the Hylen system?

The Hylén is not about text or graphics, it's for creating what Panavision calls "regional focus control" — basically the vasaline-on-the-lens effect, but with a ton more conrol.

You load one of several cartridges into it and then you get a little playstation controller that allows you to move the in-focus area around on the screen. Everything outside that zone is in soft focus. You can also dial in the intensity of the defocussing effect. The different cartridges allow different shapes for the in-focus zone. That's it!

I see.. The reason I ask is because at the weblink I posted, it says you can actually do texts overlay

Well look at that—you are absolutely right. I guess you can print graphics on the internal groundglass of the "plugin."

That seems like possibly the worst imaginable use of the system. :)

Hi,

If you can manipulate in focus in real time on set it must be the way to go. If I want narrow focus I use T1.3 not T8 & rotoscope everything later.

Stephen,

Having actually done this for a client once... I also strongly recommend against it. :)

Worst project ever.

I can answer the one about text in camera using the Hylen plugin.

Basically the idea of the Hylen system is that you use plugin cartridges (in the TRUE sense of the word plug in) that can alter selective focus or do any number of other functions that Mr Hylen designs into them.

Once such function is having some text (or shape or drawing, anything really) etched(?) onto the intra-system glass plugin. This can then be brought from out of focus to in focus using the controller and manipulated in other ways as well (rotation is one if I remember correctly from the demo I saw). The effect is like if you had writing on a clear glass in front of the camera which then became the focus, only you can keep the actual main image in focus at the same time which you can't normally do with a straight lens.

The Hylen kit does invert the image due to its extra elements but that's no problem of course, just flip it in post.

Hi,

I guess Gavin spent a week doing rotoscope on one complex scene that could have been done for free in camera, assuming the DoP had the guts!

Playing safe is not something I like to do.
