36 fps

Hi everyone,

Hope some of you will be able to help me... here's my problem :

I have some footage shot at 36 fps under the 720pn24 mode - if I'm not mistaken (I just have the footage, I didn't shoot it). In theory, this should end up being a slow motion sequence, correct ? Someone who did this before, with the same method, and same version of FCP I use (5.0.4) succesfully did his transfers... but I keep hitting a wall.

Here's what I'm doing :

Import the clips into FCP, create a 24 fps sequence, drop the clips into it... and nothing happens.

When I check the clips' properties, FCP tells me they're 23.98 fps (shouldn't it say they're 36 fps ?). I can't use the Frame Rate Converter plugin because the clips aren't DVCPRO HD 720p 59.94 fps, obviously... I've been reading about a "remove pulldown" checkbox in the import window, but I don't have that - must be in the later versions of FCP only. Lastly, the "Remove Advanced Pulldown" tool doesn't work either, as it tells me it only works with DVCPRO or DVCPRO 50 clips.

I also tried playing around with XML's, based on Bjoern Adamski's "Panasonic HVX200 720p50 p2-Workflow with Final Cut Pro" tutorial, but it didn't do anything either. But at this point it gets very technical for me, maybe a little too much.

I've been asking people left and right, they don't know what's going on (join the club !) so you guys are my last resort. Please, please, help ! :crybaby:

EDIT - Sorry about the thread title, it's not very clear... I don't see where I can change that :-(

Well you are dropping them into a 24p timeline so it is going to tell you that, but is the clip on SlowMo?

Can you Review the clip after importing the mov file, or iporting the MXF and changint eh wrapper to a MOV.? maybe a Screen grab might explain some more.

First of all, you really should take advantage of that FCP 5.1 crossgrade since there is a known problem with P2 rendered files in FCP 5.0.4

Try this workflow:

Do an Easy Set Up for DVCPRO HD 24p

Import the clips into the Browser using Import->Panasonic P2.

Highlight the clip in the Browser and from the Tools Menu apply the Panasonic FRC. You should get a dialog box asking you for desired frame rate. Select 23.98

It should then export a new clip. Bring that clip into FCP using Import (since it is a QT now, not MXF) and drop that clip into your 23.98 timeline. That should work.

When I play the timeline, the clip isn't in slow motion, no... sadly. :-(

Sorry I wasn't clear about checking the clips' properties, I meant that I check them before I drop them into a timeline - right after importing them.

Just tried that, but as I said the FRC doesn't work because the clips aren't 59.94 fps, they were shot at 36 fps. Thanks anyway.

To check the clips properties, jsut find your scratch disk, and click the wrappered MXF and check the FPS on the clips. CTRL+CLICK- get info

If you mean in the Finder, I'm not seeing any FPS info... Or is there a way in FCP to navigate through your system and get info like that ? Without importing clips, that is ?

In FCP you can right click a clip in the Browser, go to Item Properties, go to Format.

Or you can go to Tools > Analyse Movie > File, then select the file on your hard drive you want to see the info for.

If it's P2 stuff not yet imported into FCP, just open it in the P2 Import window, you can right click on the headings bar and add tons of clip info to see.

Ok forget about the FRC and all that. Create a new project. Make sure the easy set up is DVCPro HD 720/24p. DELETE sequence 1. Now create a new sequence. Drop your clip into the new sequence and it should play back as slo-mo. If it doesn't, then there was a problem when shooting. Maybe they set the camera to record 36 frames and didn't save the scene file. Then turned off the camera to change a battery or something and didn't re-set the frame rate.
BTW is there any audio channels with the clip when you import it?. A clip shot at a variable frame rate will not have any audio with it.
Unfortunately FCP 5.0.4 doesn't have an import P2 window so you cant see what the shooting rate of the clip is. AFAIK There is no way to tell using the get info, if you shot at a VFR. In the QT info and FCP it will just say vid rate 23.98 regardless of the VFR. If you upgrade to 5.1.2, in the import P2 window you can call up the "shooting rate" by control or right clicking in the column header bar.

Already checked through all those, always the same framerate.

Thanks, unfortunately no luck there either. There's no audio attached to the clips though, so it seems it was shot at a VFR... and the director assures me he checked before each take.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions... I think I tried all my options, someone with a copy of the footage is trying it on his own station as I type this. Hopefully he'll figure it out. :)
