P2 Cards for the Holiday season.

My understanding (from reading other threads) is that many HVX users are/were expecting a p2 card price shift come the holiday season or new year. Does anyone have new or relative information if we will see another price drop in the P2 market?

Some who speculated a price drop were basing their opinion on the thought that the 16 giggers were coming around the new year therefore bumping a small price decrease in the smaller cards. From what I can tell the release of the 16 gig P2 has been delayed. From research, I cannot see any of the big retailers starting to discount P2 prices.

Any thoughts? I am speaking from pure speculation and what I have come to understand as what others are thinking.

Prices are coming down in the second hand market. I have noticed 8 gig ards going for $900-950 on ebay, and 4 gig cards are down to around 420-440 second hand.

Considering the product hasn't been out very long they are worth a gamble.

I noticed it, out of experience...
In June, I bought P2 cards new (first time they cost 550 to 520 bucks)
I sold them on eBay at 450 to 480 (not incl shipping) in about an hour.
TODAY,
I recently bought used cards from spec-comm for 375 ea.
I was strapped for cash, and I couldn't even sell it at 400...
I ended up selling it at 430 to someone in italy, apparently prices have not dropped in europe...
BUT, the cool thing is that P2 cards are more abundant and they are coming down in prices...

Prodigy, my crystal ball shows it clearly.
Prices will drop. A little after the first of the year, and more by NAB when their will definately be 16gig cards.
Those 4gig cards will be going for less then $300 after NAB. The 8gig will be going for about $600 to $700.
And that HD TV you could buy for $3,000 today will be selling for about $2,200 in April also.
Crystal Ball going dark.

Let me see...Yes, up, up, down, up, up, down and up again. :crybaby:

Seriously though, everything will come down in price and will be obsolete. Ya gotta purchase wisely for your needs and make some money with that purchase. Then just move on and don't look back. I have a whole studio of obsolete gear collecting dust. I just never get around to selling it after getting new stuff.

As a film student who is not making money with his work, things like the 8 gig card giveaway and pricedrops are very important information to know. Missing these by narrow timelines is very frustrating. Thanks for everyones input.

BTW that reminds me? You want to know the EXACT date p2 cards will drop? It will be the next day after I buy them! Hahaha

Trust me Prodigy, I understand and am not knocking your post. Since 1978 I've been investing my own money in cameras and gear only to have a better and cheaper model the next year.
The last 5-10 years, the trend has gone nuts. It doesn't take a full year and the numbers of products has multiplied.
I feel blessed I got 10 good years out of my BetaCam.
But at some point after doing your homework, ya just gotta jump in.
That's why I chose the HVX. :)

That 10 years that Beta saw and more... probably won't ever be around again. There will definitely be more turn over and increased quality improvements... paritally I think because the investments are now so low. I mean... to get into Beta with the cam.. deck and capture cards.. what did that cost you 10 years ago?

Good times people

What's the most anybody spent per megabyte for a hard drive with the least amount of storage?

$800.00 = 200 Megabytes

$3600 = 4 Gb Micronet Fast/wide SCSI raid

Back in the early 80's I worked at an Apple store, and we sold the Apple ProFile for the Lisa. It was a five-megabyte hard disk (yes, not gigabytes, megabytes) and it cost $3499.00 when it was first introduced.

HAHA Barry - hope you didn't buy one :) Whats funny is to see the advertisements of those products and if you were to swap it with one of todays HDDs it would work perfectly. "Biggest available" "Great Value" "Now on Sale!" "Get Work Done Faster" "More than You'll Need"

In thinking, my first hard drive was for a Mac SE.

I bought it because I swapped floppies 65 times once when saving a Word document

Ran $750.00 for 40 megs. Boy, I was in heaven.
