XH A1 vs XH G1 vs XL H1

When you compare these cameras, they're are almost the same. The only main differences are, no XL interchangeable lens system, no 4-channel audio recording but you get an EVF and LCD both seperatley on the XH G1. And no JackPack on the XH A1. (Please tell me more)

I know there are a lot of people who already have XH A1's and some who plan to get one. I don't hear of that many who plan on getting an XH G1 though. Is the $3,000 jump in price above the A1 worth it? Or is the $2,000 jump above the G1 worth it for the H1?

They're all great cameras; I personally think the G1 with embedded SDI is a worthwhile investment, but it's more of a long term asset. There will be more affordable and convenient SDI recorders in the future, and when those emerge you can consider the camera codec agnostic.

Of course, this is only considering its uses as a field acquisition camera. The amazing thing about the G1 is it is the only handycam on the market that can show up to any
broadcast shoot and genlock with other HD or SD cameras.

I agree with you Barlow -- G1 rocks as broadcasting tool. My only doubt is if the $3,000 today is worthy of investment now, considering how much time we shall wait for a real HD-SDI portable capture. It can happen that when this will occur there will be a lot of other cameras as better offer. Including other Canon. With wider latitude from CMOS chips for example. Even if it's obvious the G1 is another HD range: codec agnostic.

For dishing out 3000.00 more for a genlock is really not worth it...You can almost get 2 A1's for the price and a multiple shot sequence and get paid for it.

Currently the only acceptable ways to capture through the HD-SDI are with an HDCAM or DVCPRO deck or directly to a computer. Perhaps we will get an HD-SDI capture solution from Focus Enhancements sometime in the near future. Untill then the only convenient way to record is HDV to MiniDV's. But I know that as soon as I get an A1 it'll happen.

Maybe I'll get a G1 and a MacBook Pro and compress it in PAL DVCPRO HD when shooting 24f. The rest of the time it could be on tape for me.

On all these cameras, the live component feed is pre-compression. Of course, if you're playing back recorded footage, the compression will have been applied (just so nobody thinks that they can somehow avoid compression in their footage by capturing recorded footage through the analog outputs).

how?..

Get a PAL DVCPRO HD deck and hook it to the computer through the HD-SDI and use it for archiving, perhaps?

It's just my idea, since PAL DVCPRO HD is 1440x1080 and supports 24p.

That's the great thing about all of the cameras. You can go tethered in a studio setup and get [potentially] better results via a different Codec.

it seems so.. but he must be kidding, perhaps?.. he knows a lot of this stuff.. on your post auditory, i was asking about hd-sdi to laptop recording..

Oh, so then, If I got a G1 I probably wouldn't be using the HD-SDI most of the time. I probably won't meet that many clients who demand their wedding in uncompressed high definition. And most people don't even notice the artifacts from HDV. And if I have no way to archive in a cheap way, I don't really need the G1.
