Thanks, Ted. I don't feel TOO bad. And I do really like my DSR450's images quite a lot. Sony took some of the sting out by offering a $3,000 rebate that I received two months after buying the camera, so my effective cost was only $12,000, including lens, case, two small Sony bricks, and a charger. My reasoning at the time was, that by the time I was finished outfitting a full-blown HVX200 package, I'd be spending nearly as much as the DSR450 package anyway. Also, I was counting on Panasonic announcing/introducing an HPX500-class camera at LAST April's NAB.TedRR said:Don't feel bad rezfactor, we are in an age like computers.
And in the end, the HPX will probably cost quite a bit more than $17K once you add some 8GB cards, glass, and possibly a viewfinder? What really threw me for a loop was the impressive progress on RED. And with RED's recent announcement of a Nikon F-mount option--whoopee! RED's no longer a $17.5K camera + $XX,XXX in glass. It's now a $17.5K camera + a few hundred dollars in Nikkors.
So, although Barry's correct, that the HPX500 is my dream camera come true, RED simply trumps every other offering on the horizon. I just didn't have the faith in Jim those few short months ago when I made my purchase decision. So, yes, I am harboring some cognitive dissonance as a result of recent RED announcements. But I do have a pretty capable 25p widescreen camera to keep shooting with until the Holy Grail of digital cine cameras is actually in production and shipping. Not even arguing RED's impressive image capabilities, it's that shallow, S35-sized, depth-of-field property of its larger imager that I'll be salivating over, once released.
