Which version of Final Cut and other questions

My HVX should arrive tomorrow,($4995 from Studio Exchange) but will have to wait a few weeks for the free p2 card.
In the meantime, I will shoot DV and edit in Final Cut Express (assuming the cam will communicate with it, anyone know?)
Obviously I will need to upgrade, but to what? I would prefer a $600 upgrade to FC 5.x to buying full FCP package if possible - but which is fully compatible with the P2 system?

Question 2: Can you record on P2 and backup on DV at same time?

From what I understand, Final Cut Express doesn't do DVCPRO-HD. And now you can't by Final Cut Pro by itself, it comes with the Final Cut Suite bundle. Which is a good move for Apple, cause for only $200 or so more than FCP by itself, you get a whole lot more.

No, you can record P2 or tape, but not both at the same time. The HVX must be re-booted to switch modes.

Isn't the output to the DV tape standard DV, which FCE can edit? Will it playback in my older Sony DHR1000 DV deck in widescreen mode? Sorry for the ignorance but I have been sidetracked from video for a few years - still have a VX1000 purchased in '96!
Thanks for all the replies - I'm new to the forum and it looks like it will be very helpful.

Supposedly there is an upgrade from Express to FC 5 for around $600, will have to go
back and try to find it...

Corrected my post, I meant to say you can't buy FCP by itself.

There is no upgrade from FCE-HD to FCS.

There is a $99 from older versions of FCE to FCE-HD that is UB.

I'd not touch it with YOUR, well, never mind...

They want $500 for an out dated 5.0 package. To get up to 5.1 you'll have spent $600 to have a version of FCP that will handle P2 really well. Not bad, but I'm very wary of software purchases on Ebay, especially when they show a photo of an open set of FCS disks.

PLUS he says the box is not included, which makes me SUPER suspicious! You get no manuals, nothing!

AND the photos shows disks that have come OUT OF THE DISK BOX and OUT OF THE PAPER ENVELOPE, which means the seal of the original disk packaging has been broken.

NOT TO MENTION there's no QuickTime Pro registration booklet shown. You need a seperate s/n to register QTPro, where's that at?

It sounds good, but I see red flags. I'd want to know why it's all open with none of the manuals that came with it and no original box, what's the deal?

I'm paranoid about these eBay software sales, though.

As long as your iMac wasn't the 17" 1.83GHz model, as that one has a graphics card that doesn't support FCS.

Bu they, contact the guy on eBay. If he has a good history there, if he answers your conserns in a good way, it could be a nice deal. I'd just check it out first, ask some questions.
